END TABLE TRASH TO TREASURE

Regular readers know that I have a favorite place to look for bargains...our downstairs trash area!  Our building has trash chutes on every floor and they feed into a separate room, but for boxes and other things that people can't put in the chute, there is an area (indoor) near the loading dock, where people can put the things they don't want.

I've found several cool items so far.
Here is the latest!

So I went downstairs as usual, on the hunt for anything good.  I found this.

Someone put this small table with a sign that said "free".  If it had been particle board or something similar, I would have ignored it.  But this is a solid wood end table (I think it's oak) and it is very sturdy.  There is nothing wrong with it other than a few superficial scratches. Oh and it has some sort of hook mounted to the side.

The wood is in great condition and would be easily ready for some primer and paint after some sanding.   Or maybe a fresh stain after some sanding.  Since I'm (hopefully) going to have a bit more free time this year without worrying so much about the house and the flowerbeds around it (since the house will mostly likely be replaced in the next two years), I'd like to begin enjoying my barn/workshop and start doing some projects like painting, refinishing some things, building a few items, etc.

Now, what to do to THIS to make it something fun and cool...?  Decisions, decisions.

  1. paint and use as plant stand, paint or stain & set between your 2 rockers on the porch and use as beverage table, mount some peg board on 3 sides and use in your workshop and mount casters on the bottom for easy moving - yes, even with them wooden legs it is possible to mount casters & the peg board can be used to hang some of your smaller hand tools but make sure you get the better hooks for the peg board as some work better than others.
Right now; all I can think of but if I think of other ideas will let you know.

  2. Why paint it at all, maybe a light sanding will make it gorgeous again? Could it be solid teak? Most of our furniture is teak and it looks very much like that. If so you can use a little teak oil after sanding.
    It's a good find.

  3. What a cool item you found. If it is solid, I personally would try sanding and staining first. If you don't like it you can always paint over it.

  5. That is such a great little table. Solid wood and just the right size for so many uses. All of Colleen's idea are very good. Another idea: use in the kitchen, perhaps by the stove for frequently used items. If in the kitchen, it could be put into temporary duty when you're canning and need supplies close at hand.
I go with the others who suggested not painting - the wood is so beautiful.

  6. That's a great table. Is the hook the sort you can hang something on? If so, it might be nice in a bathroom. Or it can be in a kitchen with a dish towel on the hook or oven mitts. I don't think it needs to be painted, but if you decide to paint, perhaps you can go a little crazy with it.

    Love,
    Janie

  8. I was thinking, I hope you won't be demolishing that old house, there are people who will buy it and move it. Anyone setting up a new home could use the money from that kind of a sale.
