We have horses, and they damaged a few troughs over the years. We had both metal and the Rubbermaid ones, all 100 gallon size. My husband did drill some extra holes for me, but pretty much all the troughs have a drain hole at the base of one long side which is also the place you insert a water heater.

I'm disabled, so getting up and down off the ground is tough, but bending over is impossible as I have balance issues. I can use my walker with seat with to maneuver around the row of troughs. We put down landscape fabric under the troughs to keep weeds from growing between them. I have 9 now, all casualties from our horses, or free from FB buy sell trade lists or local farm sales and auctions.

I resolved the issue of filling the tanks AND the watering question by going through our firewood stacks and grabbing all the logs which have some rot to them. The more rot the better. Put those in the bottom, and the wood is amazingly absorbent. I consider it a modified hugelkulture or lasagna gardening system. In some cases I added a lot of broken branches on top of the logs, then a layer of straw, then newspaper before adding garden soil and composted manure, but mostly the flakes of compressed straw and layers of newspaper have kept the soil from sifting down much at all. At least the levels of the soil haven't dropped too much.

I did add some worms to each tank, and I mulch my troughs heavily once the plants are getting high enough. that helps keep the soil uniformly moist.

This year I'm also growing 3 garbage cans of potatoes. In their case my husband drilled holes in 3 45 gallon garbage cans. I put a few layers of newspaper in the bottom, then about a foot of good soil and compost. I planted 6 seed potatoes, then as the pants grow you just keep adding straw around the stems. Layer and layer, keep watering. Eventually the leaves of the plant yellow and fall over, which is your clue to dump the can and harvest your beautiful very clean potatoes!
GiantsDanceFarmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01348898528809221562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3552387675026716797.post-738811434829883282018-04-29T18:55:00.854-05:002018-04-29T18:55:00.854-05:00These work well for Hugelkultur beds too.

She ended up planting her pumpkins in it, so that will be interesting. I'll have to ask her how much dirt she put in hers... she's on a farm, so no issue with lack of soil and compost to use. Another plus for gardening with these is that the critters (like rabbits) can't get in to eat the tender veggies. I'm deciding right now on my soil mix & LOVE the reminder about hugelkultur - I plan to give that a try. However, as this is my first foray into trough gardening, does anyone know if earthworms would survive? I'm hoping someone with more experience than me can give me some insight. Thanks so much! AZ though I know it gets crazy hot there. I have never read of it being a problem in my research but I'm not sure. I suppose it would decide on the size. Smaller probably could heat up more but I still think enough soil will maintain a cool temperature. I love the look
of the galvanized oval containers. I saw someone post a comment from
the Phoenix Az area who was concerned about the heat and those containers. I am also from the Phoenix area and am wondering the same
question. I don't believe it was addressed. I am sure that we would
have to put up some kind of sail or barrier if exposed to the sun. But
the temps even in the shade can still be 100 degrees in the summer. Keep in mind that anything that is acrylic is a plastic based paint. Plastic yellows and eventually cracks and peels if exposed to extreme temps. Keep that in mind when selecting a color if you choose acrylic. It's best for more porous surfaces where is soaks in and won't peel. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
