YUM!
There is nothing that seems more "Summer in America" than watermelon.
Crispy...sweet...
...bright pink and red...green and white rind...

...and juicy. We love watermelon. We'd like to grow some at the farm but it takes a bit of work and a lot of regular water, we'll have to focus on that later.
I do have to admit that I'm torn between either watermelon or cantaloupe being my favorite. 2nd Man is more of a watermelon only person, I love both. Never been a big honeydew melon fan though.
What about you? Big watermelon fans?
Any favorite way to eat it?

I llove watermelon. I am not a fan of cantaloupe or watermelon. I have a watermelon that I must figure out how to get from the back door to kitchen and onto counter. Now, that I see yours, I am motivated.
ReplyDeleteI meant to say I am not a fan of cantaloupe or honeydew.
DeleteLOL I understand. Watermelons (the regular big ones) are SO heavy. Sometimes they won't even fit in the fridge until you cut them up. Hope you enjoy yours!
DeleteLove watermelon. My "go to" salad these days is cubed watermelon, drizzled with a very small amount of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, plus crumbled feta and slivered fresh basil. Plus salt and cracked black pepper. Yes, pepper; I really like it as a counterpoint to the sweetness of fruit.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, THAT sounds yummy. Thanks for that. I just might have to try that out with our next one. I always use salt but never thought about pepper. That all sounds delicious!! Thanks!!
DeleteI love watermelon .. sprinkled with salt ... and icy cold ... cantaloupe is OK but must be dead ripe and again a light sprinkle of salt ... Mr B likes either one but with fresh ground pepper and no salt. My godmother used to serve cantaloupe with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for desert...
ReplyDeleteHey there!!! Icy cold is a must isn't it? So refreshing on a hot day. And yes, cantaloupe with vanilla ice cream is very good. Thanks! (and another vote for pepper, will try that next time).
DeleteWish I had some right about now. Looks so cool and refreshing. I enjoy a good cantaloupe as well; especially jell-o stuffed cantaloupe....... makes for a great snack.

Thanks for the links. Yummy!!!!
DeleteYum I love all melons although it's always a crapshoot if you will get a good one. I dont mind paying more and buying a half so I can see how ripe it is. Seems like the seedless ones have the least flavor but its all you can get.
ReplyDeleteOh my that is SO true. We just threw out a cantaloupe that was COMPLETELY tasteless. And hard to tell for sure.
Deletemy husband had a watermelon granita last night which was one of the best things i've ever tasted!
ReplyDeleteOh my now that sounds good. Down these parts they serve a drink called Aguas Frescas that is pureed watermelon, it's incredible.
Deletecantaloupe is #1; you can keep watermelon and honeydew.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I understand it's not for everyone!
DeleteDoes anyone like honeydew melons?? I've never tasted one I've liked yet. Watermelon is wonderful. Cantaloupe is good sometime but it has to be just the right ripeness.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, I don't DISLIKE them, but I'm not a big fan either. Seem like they don't have a great taste. Maybe it's all about the ripeness for all of them, ha.
Deletei looove watermelon, canteloupe and honeydew - in fact - i haven't met a melon i don't like! we start getting local melons in august so august is melon month for us - which is "true" summer up here so watermelon and other melons really mean "summer" to us. i am trying to grow watermelon and canteloupe this year *fingers crossed*
ReplyDeletesending much love to you both! your friend,
kymber
Melon month! I love that! I wanty to try growing them too. I understand they need LOTS of water. We might not have that ability for awhile, ha. Love back at ya!
DeleteWatermelon pickles? That rind looks like it has enough white to make them.
ReplyDeleteTexas melons always seem better to me, more flavor.
watermelon pickles? can you esplain and provide a recipe? i have never heard of them! thank you!
DeleteI've heard of them but have never made them. In fact, I don't think we've ever eaten them. Now I'm off to read more about them. Thanks!!!
DeleteAnd Kymber, I'm with ya!
Kymber, You make the pickles out of the white part of the rind. They are a sweet pickle type. I haven't made them in several years as today's melons do not have as much of the white part of the rind. Most cookbooks that list recipes for canning pickles have a recipe for watermelon pickles. Our Mom made them every year and gave them to eager friends.
