GETTING ORGANIZED FOR HOLIDAY STORAGE

You may remember this picture:

This is (kind of) what our garage attic space will look like.  It will be floored, and I will partially wall it after we move in, so we can use it for storage.  I figured if we had a ton of boxes up there, it would be hard to figure out what is what for different holidays even if they are labeled (a box gets turned around, etc).

So, I thought of putting things in color coded boxes to correspond to their contents.  What?  See below:

Here are a few of the ones we have already acquired (that I could get to).  There are a few already in use but this is just to give an example.

We have a couple of these already, though I am not sure they are the same style.  But they are orange with black lids.  That's screams Halloween decor.

I decided black with a red lid would be good for our Day of the Dead decor.  We have three of these since, as you know, we already have a lot of those decorations, ha!

Of course, hello, bright red is Christmas.  We have four (five?) of these and that's where we keep the majority of our Christmas decorations.  But we MIGHT need some more later this Fall, ha.

This pink one is obviously Valentine's Day!  OK so red may also be obvious but since red was already taken, and pink wouldn't work for any other holiday, Valentine's Day it will be!

This pale green has become our Easter color.  I bought two of them and they are perfect for the Easter decor.

In fact, here is an example:

This is one of them with some Easter items in it (including that awesome garland I found).

This one is for...4th of July decorations! We have two of these since we have quite a few things.

Hello, St Patrick's Day!  Perfect color green.  Again, these colors are also used at Christmas for storage, but since we're trying to keep our holidays sorted, and we already have red for Christmas things, this was perfect for the luck of the Irish!

This one is going to be for Mardi Gras decorations.  They made a dark purple one that I would love to have had, but they are sold out.  Since the colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold, this will still work!

Here are a some more that I bought recently, just because these colors come and go throughout the year and once gone, they are next to impossible to find.

This will be where you all come in:

Suggestions for what holiday or decor to use them for?

This is an aqua/teal blue green.

They call this one orange but it's definitely different from bright Halloween orange.  I was thinking that this might do as Fall/Thanksgiving.  But as Fall gets here, they might just have an even better new color for Thanksgiving so f I don't need it for that, any ideas?

This one is marine blue.  It was the original one I chose for the 4th of July box but the other blue is a much more patriotic shade of blue, so this one is up for grabs as far as holidays.

I also have a white one.  This one could have been 4th of July for sure, but it can be for something else.

The good thing is that for now...

...they stack up easily for storage until we have the attic space to put them.  After that, we can begin sorting through our decorations as we find them after the move and start getting them filled.

  1. I like how you got your containers colored organized for your holiday decorations.
Now you can put your Fall and Winter containers on one side and your Spring and Summer containers on the other side of your attic. Misc. items containers along the back wall. Keep a couple empty containers up close just in case you need to grab an empty one for other items.
    Enjoy your day
    Blessings 2 U both

    1. Good idea and you saying the word Winter made me think of maybe winter decorations in the white one, ha. But yeah that's smart to put them together by season so I don't have to dig around for the one I want, just work around the attic, ha. I'll have to see how much exact space we have once we move in and figure out how to arrange things. But good idea to keep some empties up there.

  2. Color coding holiday items is such a great idea! Really easy to find and store.

    1. I was thinking that and hope it works like I picture it in my head, ha. I figured it would just be easier than labeling and the label falls off or its gets put up the wrong direction or something. I can send 2nd Man up there and say "grab all the red containers" and it'll be easy, ha.

  3. What a great idea. Do you have decorations for spring, summer, fall or winter that don't have holiday connotations?

    1. A few and yes, that's good thinking as we get more items. Heck, like I mentioned white could be good for winter and now I'm thinking yellow! for summer, great, now I have to hunt for another one, ha.

  4. That is such a smart Idea! I would have one with generic party decor/birthday/etc.

    1. Ooh, generic birthday stuff is a great idea or maybe just make it birthday/anniversary/etc. A celebration box! :-). Hmm...

  5. I did try the same idea a few years ago. What I found out that was MUCH better was clear containers where I can see decorations but a large tape on end indicating holiday or what in them. The solid, non see through containers made searching much harder

    1. I thought about that but when I already had the red ones for Christmas the last few years and got the pale green ones for all the Easter stuff I decided to stay on a theme, ha. but you are right, if you are looking for something specific in one, the clear would let you find it easier. But maybe since we'll be getting stuff out for the holiday, we'd get all of it/them out at once anyway, at least that's my hope, LOL!

  6. I do the same thing, using colors for holidays! Clear containers let light in and eventually things fade. Hate clear. Practical Parsimony

    1. Oh I never thought about that with clear, though our attic would not have light coming in but still that's a consideration, thank you!

  7. I think clear with a colored lid would work since the bins will not be in any direct sunlight ... so, fading would not be an issue!

    1. Thanks, yeah, there will be no light at all coming in, no windows up there in the attic. Thank you!!

  8. Take my word, things fade in very little light. Imagine taking out fabric folded and stored in a semi-dark place and finding fade marks.

  9. On back wall have a shelving unit for extra storage space or have shelves built for storing maybe some misc. tubs / totes. With shelves on back wall, would help from using up all the floor space.

  10. Fading problem. I roll up my good table cloths, etc. and put in them in the round storing tubs. By rolling your fabric, you have no fold lines.
