UNEXPECTED EXPENSE NEW HOUSE UPDATE

A few weeks ago, we got the go ahead to have the electricity moved from the temporary pole back to the house since they had the breaker box installed and were ready.  Sounded good, we'll call the power company.  We called them, they went out.

Then we got a return call:

"Sir, based on the size of your house, the transformer is not big enough..."

"What?  What do you mean?"

"Well, the old one was 10kVA and judging from your breaker box and the size of your new house and the electric panel, you're going to need a bigger transformer.  25kVA will be what you need".

"How much will this cost?"

$1950 installed".

😳😳😳😳😳

"Can you add it to our monthly billing or something?"

"No, it has to be paid in full, but we will credit your account each month for a portion until it's paid back, about $25/month".

So, almost $2000 later, we have this.  It doesn't LOOK that impressive but I guess a lot of the things we pay for in a house build, we never get to see, they just quietly do their job in the background.

Water comes out of the ground...pay for a well.

Waste goes down the drain...pay for a septic.

Electricity comes into the outlet...pay for a transformer.

So, now it's connected, the meter is installed, and the breaker box is ready.  They will work on electrical this week and then we'll have power!

Another update in a couple of days.

Getting closer!

  1. Ouch…so let me get the straight, in 6.5 years you will have the $1950. Back?

  2. Better to get it dealt with now rather than later! It's a one-time situation ... hopefully!

  3. I love how you pointed out that so much of home building is paying for the things we never see, yet rely on every day. Exciting that the power is finally connected and everything’s moving forward. www.melodyjacob.com

  4. What fun would building your dream house be, without the stories you will have from unexpected challenges.
The house is going to be great!

  5. I'm surprised that this was the first "ouch". You're lucky in that regard.

  6. An expensive bump in the road of your house build! But it’s a good thing that the power company people were thorough professionals and checked your new house requirements.

  7. Nice that you now have power to the house, but sad that it came as such a price to pay. I noticed in the new housing development that is going on in our area that many are having solar panels put on; not all, but some.
Hopefully you don't have any more 'bumps' in the future.
You both take care; stay safe and keep cool.
    Blessings 2 U both

  8. My guess is this should last the your lifetime at the house as well as some years to come. Be glad you got it done now and not in the middle of a snowstorm or whatever kind of inclement weather Texas can offer up!!!

  9. This is a better now than later upgrade! But a question for you... Is there some type of screen covering the bottom? The reason why I ask is that there was one like this in my dad's yards and one of his cats crawled up there... Did not end up very well for the cat... :-(
