OK, let me tell you...Omar, thanks for stopping by. OK, let me tell you what we did. Our ground soil is also clay. If you'll look at this post above and then check the next few days after it there are pics of how we did the soil. These boards are 4 feet x 4 feet x 12 inches deep. That is the widest board we could get. Our goal was to give the roots a head start. They will eventually get into the clay but this extra 12" gives them a head start. the beds are open, there is no top and bottom. So I put the box on the ground where it was going to go, then turned the soil a bit, I put cardboard down to kill grass (and as it deteriorates, it will help with the clay a bit too. Then I filled the beds with good soil, compost, etc in layers (there is a post on that) and then I just planted the trees. The goal was that the trees were young and the roots will eventually find a way down into the clay. All the organic soil on top of the clay will also help break it down as bugs and worms and such do their work. If you look at our blog over the last couple of days, there are pics of the fruit trees now and they are huge and producing fruit. (the citrus trees you'll see are three new beds we added last year). As big as the trees are now they had to have put roots deep down into the clay and are doing great. I'm guessing the clay underneath has been transformed a bit as the roots developed. Someday we hope to just remove the wooden sides and we'll just have an orchard with lumps in the yard and nice fruit trees.

We hope that helps! Just leave the bottoms open, break up the clay a bit and then add good soil and compost and whatever else up to the top edge of the "box" and then put the tree in the middle. Let us know if you have any questions and good luck!1st Manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861609647607912193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3552387675026716797.post-35063723654270406482020-05-17T18:40:38.805-05:002020-05-17T18:40:38.805-05:00Thank you so much sharing your experience with the...Thank you so much sharing your experience with these neat beds. I am planning to build a couple of beds in my backyard and your blog by far the best explanation I was able to find online!!! I have one question and hope to find an answer as, again, tons of online search, could not find a good answer. The question is what is the best bed height for fruit trees (persimmons, apple, peach, pear, pomegranate) assuming that I am not relaying on the ground soil (which is bad clay with poor drainage).

OmarAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3552387675026716797.post-85183763238963117742017-02-09T00:17:54.145-06:002017-02-09T00:17:54.145-06:00Those carts are just amazing. Plus these aren't bare root. I would have done them in Fall though if I could have, but just didn't get enough time to get the beds done. But we should be good. I'll pinch off the flowers this first season. And yep, we're hoping for just as you said, close by and easy to get to. :-)1st Manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861609647607912193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3552387675026716797.post-30448119407803830812017-02-08T10:02:49.432-06:002017-02-08T10:02:49.432-06:001st Man,

They make your job so much easier when hauling anything on the property.....in fact, I've used my cart inside the house to move furniture.

Can't wait to read more about your boxes for your fruit tress in part 2 of your post. By planting trees in the spring, the tree struggles to grow roots, leaves, blossoms all at once. It takes longer to establish trees planted in spring.

With trees right back of the house, you can go pick an apple if one ripens first. Nothing will be left if fallen on the ground. If the trees were far away, you would not be able to monitor closely. The cart though has come in handy lots of times. There is a post tomorrow with the raised beds. Yep, we sort of staked off the spots but we still had to maneuver them around.

There won't be any ground digging other than loosening the soil a bit. We're ok with lines, there is only one electrical line, no gas out there in the country, no cable in the back, and the water line is in the front yard coming from the well. So we're good for this go round. 1st Manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861609647607912193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3552387675026716797.post-83633147114221402842017-02-06T23:13:17.758-06:002017-02-06T23:13:17.758-06:00We got lucky and got these trees on "end of s...We got lucky and got these trees on "end of season" clearance last Fall and they were pretty tall. You can easily tend to them while they are establishing their root system, but later on you will be able to enjoy the blossoms to the fullest. Nothing is more beautiful (or fragrant) than a blooming fruit tree. And how much easier will the harvesting be when it is so close to the house?
I prefer my cart to my wheelbarrow. I guess I am a funny driver because I have tipped my wheelbarrow over more times than I would like to admit, but the cart is always upright. Our peach and blood plum both gave fruit, albeit only a small handful, in their first year. The blood plum had just one which we all fought over. What can I say?
