GRANDMOTHERS QUILT

Getting things set up in the house. We were going through quilts we had saved and stored away and found this one.  My grandmother (on my mom's side) made most of them and when she passed, we found some that had been made but never used.

With the guest room being pink and yellow in its color palette, we figured this one would be perfect on the bed in there.  Bought some new sheets and put them on and then put on this quilt.

Here is a closeup.  I remember when we my mom pulled it out of the linen closet at my grandparents' house, she looked at the star shapes and recognized some of the fabric from dresses she had as a child. Most of it was from old flour sacks that doubled as extra fabric for creating things around the house, including dresses and/or quilts.

I took this picture before we put the bedspread on so you all could see it. Not sure what this pattern/detail is called but I bet some of you out there know, ha. It fits the bed just enough, though it doesn't go down the sides much; it was probably made for a full-size bed instead of a queen, but it still looks awesome on there.

We are waiting on one piece of furniture for the room and it will be finished.  Once it's done, we will be sure and post pictures.  We love how it's coming together.

  1. It’s an appliqué star pattern and very nicely done. She would have created the stars and then appliquéd each onto a pink square before joining all the squares, adding batting and backing, then quilting and finally adding the binding. Rest assured she spent many months on it. It’s a beauty.

  3. I have a quilt my MIL made. Our bed is a king and the quilt was made for a standard full size bed. Now it fits sideways across the bottom of our bed. I feel like we are using and respecting her work, even though it is not being used as it wa originally intended.

  4. I've been a quilter since 1992 and am so glad you're using your Grandmother's lovely quilt! Each stitch contains love in it.
Beware of cats getting on the bed and snagging quilting stitches. That can happen as I sadly know.

    Hugs!

  5. My best friend is a quilter and she has made some stunners over the years. My theory is quilters are lovely people, I've not met one to prove me wrong.

  6. What a treasure to have quilts handmade by your grandma. She was very talented. This one is absolutely beautiful. It was made with a lot of love and it's even more heartwarming with fabric from your mom's dresses.
My sister and I each have a quilt made by our mom with leftover fabric from the clothes she made for us - so very special. And I remember picking out the fabric we liked from chicken feed sacks which she used to make us pajamas and play clothes.

  7. That beautiful quilt is perfect for that room! And, we can see it is all hand-stitched! I wonder if a quilting bee was arranged to get it finished!

  8. Just a lovely quilt, and how nice to have such a great keepsake from your grandmother. We also have king sized beds, and I find these old double bed sized quilts work perfectly as toppers, just folded and laid across the bottom of the bed, for those extra-chilly nights when you need a bit more warmth. .Second the warning about kitties snagging their toenails...ask me how I know!

  9. That is a beautiful quilt. My grandmother was a quilter. I have one she made with fabric from my old clothes. She made another for me using pink fabric. I was her only granddaughter, so pink was always her color choice for me. My favorite is a Cathedral Window pattern that she made for my mother that I inherited. I wish I had more of her quilts.
