Today I stumbled across perhaps the simplest of all:

I think this is the method I will use.
You don't even have to glue the saucer on top,
though I would do that just to keep it from falling off it's perch.
You could also fill the top with birdseed and have a couple side by side.
Anything to make the birds happy!
