WALL SCONCE CANDLE HOLDERS, THRIFT STORE FIND

Wall Mounted Candle Holder
Here is a lunchtime thrift store find, two wall mounted candle holders or sconces!  They are metal, sort of a tin type metal, and are in a shape that sort of reminds me of a pineapple, though I think it's probably just supposed to be leaves.  They hold one candle each with a small area to catch drips.  Of course, we have a huge supply of smokeless/dripless candles so that's not usually an issue but it's still a nice feature to keep any wax off the floors.  I almost wonder if there was some sort of glass hurricane shade of some sort on them at one point?  I'll keep my eyes out for something that might work for that.
I thought about painting them, but after hanging them on each side of the clock to measure them and see what they looked like, I decided I kind of liked the look and the character it brings to the living room.  So they will be left as they are.  Best part of all?  It was only $3.50 for the set of two!

Buying these and putting them up reminded me that we want to have other things in the house that could provide alternative means of light in the event of a storm or some other reason we are without electricity.  I have some oil lamps that I salvaged from my Grandparent's cellar years ago and I need to get them cleaned up and usable as well.  We already have the wall mounted oil lamps in the dining room that I blogged about HERE, so we just need some more "alternate light sources" in the other rooms.  What about you?  Do you keep oil lamps and other similar things around just in case you need them?

  1. Oh my, those are very pretty. I like the look with the old clock. Yes, we try to get an oil lamp in every room. We even use them sometimes, just for kicks, and to keep them running properly (better to know BEFORE a power failure, ha). My hubby keeps a 5gallon jug of lamp oil in the shed. We had a storm where we lost power for 3 days, and it sure was nice turning these on at night.

    1. Thanks! I like that you have an oil lamp in every room. I would love to just live by candlelight on occasion, I bet it's very peaceful. During hurricane Ike, we had no power for 2 weeks (didn't have the farm them) and it was no fun and very dark at night. I'm looking forward to not having those worries. I like the 5 gallon jug idea too!

  2. the sconces are just delightful! and i am glad that you are going to leave them as they are...they have such character! and yes, we have kerosene and oil lamps for every room of the house. we rarely turn any lights on as we enjoy natural light so much...in the evening we only ever have one lamp on in the living room for when we are reading or watching tv. otherwise, all of the other room's lights are off. and we are now into our favourite time of year - the sun doesn't set until 8-8:30 so we really don't need the lights. anyway - love your sconces and yes - i bet that they did originally have the hurricane shades.

    1. More people with oil lamps in every room. At least I know it's not just me that thinks that's a good idea. Yes, it's funny how I bought them, 'thinking' I should paint them and then when I got them out there, they just "fit". I'm going to keep my eye out for some glass shade that might work. Until then, I'll enjoy them. Thanks Kymber!!

    1. Thank you! I had a post on it a few months back, if you are curious about it's origins.

  4. Great find! I love thrift stores too. I have oil lamps and lots of candles. I get most of my candles in thrift shops for pennies. Doesn't matter what color they are, if the lights are out they will work. You can cluster some together on an old plate or metal pan to catch any drips, you get more light that way. I've bought some of the candles in jars but they don't light up much.

    1. Aren't they the best? Like garage sales with air conditioning, LOL. I've yet to run into candles themselves, that's a great idea. Of course I've not been "looking" for them, so that's probably why I didn't see them, ha. I've always liked the look of a group of candles together. hey, light is light, right? Thanks for the suggestion.

  5. We too have lots of candles and oil lamps scattered around. You might want to consider a few lanterns for outside use as well. They can look decorative and nice on a porch but in the middle of the country, can provide a lot of light for you if you need it outside. I noticed you link to Lehman's on your resources page, they have some nice ones. You never know when something, manmade or othewise will render us without power.

    1. Thanks for visiting! Welcome to the blog. Outdoor lanterns were something I was planning, and yes, love the selection at Lehman's. Yep, we've had some winter power outages when there was (rare) ice on the lines, and then a few summer "brownouts" over the the years, and of course Hurricane Ike blacked out most of the city for TWO WEEKS. That was an experience you can't even imagine. Middle of summer, no power, everything in the fridge and freezer lost, most of the stores closed. It REALLY makes you think that we all need to be prepared. As you said, manmade or otherwise, we never know what might happen.

That's another reason we started on this journey to creating the farm, so we CAN be more self sufficient.

Thanks again for stopping by. come back soon!

  6. Just ran across your blog, love it! I love thrift store finds! We also have a lot of oil lamps and candles around the house, we live far enough out that when the electric goes out it's out for at least a day or two. :)

    1. Wow, thank you for the kind words. And welcome!!! I just love thrift store finds too. Thanks for letting us know about oil lamps, sometimes I feel strange telling coworkers and such that we want to have them in every room, but like you, I just want to be prepared, someday, for any eventuality, ha.

      Thanks again!! Please come back!
