BASKETS IN THE KITCHEN

Baskets in the Kitchen
Recently, we decided to get some more baskets for use in the kitchen.  We had a few, but since they are always handy for baked goods, and occasionally for other uses, we decided we want to try to keep several different styles.  So, over the last few weeks, I've been hitting up tag sales and thrift stores on the search.  I've even pulled a couple we had in storage and various locations around the house in town and I've put them all together in one place; the top of the yellow hutch in the kitchen at the farm.

I've been trying to get shapes that are useful for the different things he bakes.  A couple of big round ones for round loaves of bread, some long narrow ones for baguettes,  some oval and square ones for biscuits and rolls, and some deep round ones for muffins and scones.  We just throw a dishtowel in the bottom and then fill them with delicious things fresh from the oven.  I decided to keep them all in the kitchen and grouping them all together in one spot keeps them not only convenient for use, but it looks like we have a collection of some sort.  In a sense, I guess we do!

  1. I used to be quite the basket collector. In our old house I rigged a shower curtain rod high up in the powder room to hang all the baskets from. It was nice to see them and easily accessible. Here now I've reduced my number of baskets but still keep them handy on a shelf in the pantry/laundry room/mud room. I grab one whenever I head to the garden to harvest.

I like your display of them!

    1. Wow, a shower curtain rod is a smart idea. Having some for quick 'grab and go' is perfect. I forgot about needing some for harvest.

      Thank you!

  2. I love baskets:) IMO you can never have too many, and they look SO much nicer than all of the cheap plastic containers that so many people use for storage now...bleh:( Don't get me wrong - I still have plenty of plastic in my house, but I don't like it and I sometimes wonder if the house caught fire if it would burn for days like a pile of old tires? I do think that in the future, if you are going to TALK about baked goods that you shouldn't be such a tease and show us a shot or two of your baskets filled with all of this goodness that you speak of....who doesn't love some food porn!?

    1. LOL is right! You made me crack up laughing. We've got a lot of plastic too but we're trying to cut down as we do stuff at the farm and go with more natural kinds of stuff. We'll see. And yes, we'll get some 'food porn' up soon, no worries. ;-)

  3. Love the baskets! I too have a collection of baskets. The hubbs made a huge mistake and threw all of my baskets out some years ago. Fortunately I didn't have any fancy pant expensive baskets but boy was I mad!

I have since collected more. Besides displaying on shelves another great way to display/store is a basket tree

    1. Sorry you 'lost' some of your baskets. I bet he won't do that again! Thrift stores are a great place for tons of baskets. And they are usually inexpensive.

That basket tree is too cool! Thanks for the link!

  4. Nice collection. I need to set aside a basket for collecting vegetables from the garden. Another one for trips to the Farmers Market, another for my husbands home baked bread... hmmm... maybe I need a collection too!

  5. Oh, you're just like me with the baskets! All shapes and sizes, for breads, fruit and garden harvesting. And mine are on top of the hutch in the living room, unfortunately no room in the kitchen. They are so handy for toting something homemade when off to visit friends, too.

    1. It's a neat thing to have huh? If we didn't have room in the kitchen, I'd find a place for them, ha. Tonya above posted a link for a vertical way of storing them, you might check that out.

Great point about using them to take stuff to visit friends, I like that.

    1. Now I have a reason to buy some more....Christmas!! Wonderful idea to make and bake things and give them out in baskets. I can usually find them for such low prices, it would be great to store some up for that use. I don't mind another reason to shop! Thank you!

  8. I have been looking for just the right tiered baskets to keep produce in for a while now. When I saw your post, I thought that if YOU have the ones I am looking for I may need to make you an offer you cant refuse ;) They do come in handy, especially huge ones that keep produce in the root cellar. I love your building collection.

  9. I love the look of all the baskets in one place. I have a large white one on top of my refrigerator that holds the miserable little plastic containers I use to send left-overs home with the kids. I try to keep few enough pieces of plastic that they don't show over the rim of that nice old basket, but the plastic breeds and overflows.

    1. It's nice to have them all in one place, makes it look like a "collection", ha. Hey, using one to store the plastic ones is a good idea. At least it keeps them under control and out of sight.

  10. That's a lot of baskets. You must be making a lot of baked goods! It looks fantastic all grouped together like that, I can see myself doing something similar in the cottage on the hill when I get around to actually doing something with the kitchen!

    1. Before, they were just scattered around, but putting them all in one spot really makes them stand out, and makes it convenient. The baked goods come in phases, like a muffin phase, then there is a break of a few weeks, then a bread phase, ha. I figured with the baskets out and visible, it might be more inspiring to bake more often. I can't wait to see what you do with your cottage kitchen. :-)
