Wildflowers of Houston and SE Texas by: John and Gloria Tveten |
Many of our regular readers know that I've often posted pictures of random flowers I find around the property. More often than not, I don't have a clue what they are. Well I'm clueless no more because I found this book! It's called Wildflowers of Houston and Southeast Texas. It's a visual guide to over 200 wildflowers found in this part of the state.
The flowers in the book are divided by color, which is a pretty cool way to find them. Next Spring, it will be an invaluable tool as I try to identify all the wonderful colors that magically appear. Actually, I'm still seeing flowers coming up now, so I'll be trying it out soon. Maybe now I won't have to post about some random yellow/pink/white flowers that I find in the yard, LOL.
It's really neat that there is a book that is so specific to our area and our part of the state and I have a feeling that it will prove to be a great resource. It even has medicinal and/or culinary uses of flowers that might be attached to something wild and edible.
I dare say this book is going to be farmhouse coffee table worthy!
Off to the farm today to get some mowing time in. Heat indexes over 100, ugh, but it is what it is I suppose. Updates over the weekend!

Enjoy your book, look forward to what you find on the farm.
ReplyDeleteIt's already come in handy! I'll have some posts coming up with flowers that I was actually able to identify. :-)
DeleteWhat a great find!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the blue flower on the cover? I'd like to grow it, but whether it would survive is another matter altogether. 100 deg is not nice, but it could be worse. In South West England it has been torrential rain today (yet again). No summer for us this year.
Well hello there! I've been watching the Olympics and seeing that parts of the country are getting lots of rain. Sorry for that! That flower on the cover is actually our state flower (of Texas). It's called the "Bluebonnet".
DeleteHere is a wiki link about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Bluebonnet
It's a beautiful flower and in the spring it grows in fields and along the sides of roads. They are just so pretty.
What a great book! I love wildflowers. Heck, I don't live in Texas but I'd like a book like that. I wonder if there are ones for different areas?
ReplyDeleteYou know, i'm sure alot of the wildflowers are all over the states, probably the Southern US for sure. You should check your local library or even a local bookstore. Most bookstores usually have a section devoted to local gardening issues. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, how sweet you are!! Thank you! By the way I LOVE Eco Footprint and Dani, she is doing great stuff. Thank you for following us on the journey. It's a slow but steady process. Big steps sometimes, small steps more often but ultimately they are all moving in the right direction. I try to blog at least once every day, many times I get a wild hair and post a couple times, ha. Thank you again, we appreciate everyone!
DeleteGreat book...you are going to be a wildflower expert...we won't be able stump you on anything!
