PHOTO COLLAGE WALL WORK IN PROGRESS

Sitting area empty wall
This weekend, I started working on the sitting area in the master bedroom. It's one of the last mostly unfinished spaces.  We have this wall on one side of the area that is big and blank and tall.  I wanted to put a low piece of furniture on the wall, so I found the one below.  It's the perfect size for the space, not too deep, and the exact perfect width.  Storage is important in a small house so this one was also appealing because of the spaces for storage baskets.

These white boxes are on "loan" from the mudroom.  I'd like to find some white baskets with lids but I'm sure I'll find those when the time comes.  This will give us the storage of course, as well as a spot for some things sitting on top, but the most exciting part is the big, blank wall above it.  I've always wanted to do a "memories wall".  Photos of family and friends and pets and places we've been...and then do something like in the photos below:

I like the various elements in the one above, even having an empty frame or two would be neat.  There are also things other than frames, for example the initial on the wall, the plate, and the mirror...I kind of like that.

Photo collage grouping
Having all black and white photos is a really nice touch too.  Not sure we'll do that, but I like how these are very symmetrically arranged and with a tall narrow space, I just might have to do something more like this arrangement.

This is a nice grouping as well.  Sort of random, with a mixture of frames and styles.  Not sure of the significance of the numbers in this photo but I like that too.  Birthdays perhaps?  It's nice to make it personalized like that.

Now I'm off to find some random frames and start deciding what pictures to use and what other things we want to use for our "memories wall" and then to decide how to arrange them all into something that looks nice.

Do any of you have anything like this on a wall in your house?  Any suggestions or advice?

  1. For me, the wall pictures seem a bit busy for a bedroom. I would want something simple and calming. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

    1. I totally understand. It will be on a wall that's not directly in the bedroom, it's off to the side, so it won't be totally in my direct view. At least I hope I don't find it too busy, never thought about that till now, ha.

  2. Hello! I think it's very pretty. I thing if it's done right, it won't be too busy, and correct me if I'm wrong but I think you said this is a sitting area in the bedroom? Maybe it can't be seen constantly from a certain angle? I'm just guessing. I just wish I had the wall space for something like this, haha. As the other stuff you've done, I'm sure it will be pretty and just "you".

    1. Ha, we're on the same page. Yes, it will be off to the side. But she brings up a good point, I'll just have to get it all hung up and see what I think. Above the bed I want a calming and soothing picture to look at ha.

And thank you for the kind words!

  3. my sister has a wall like this in her dinning room, she used all black frames with cream matte and black and white photos, it turned out very beautiful :)

I like the idea of using things other than just frames, something like Mary tyler moore had in her apartment on her show your initials...I've always loved that :)

  5. I am partial to the second photo grouping. I think something like that, in all black and white would be stunning. No colors to fight with each other or the rest of your decor.

I think Anonymous just wants to hit you with the spam link in that comment above. I just viewed your blog in IE and found no issues.

    1. Thanks for the heads up, the spam filter usually catches those but not this time for some reason. I waved my magic wand and it's gone now! ;-)

Yeah, I like the second one a lot. Of course mine will end up being whatever it is, but for now these (and everyone's comments) will give me a guideline. Then I'll publish mine for the world to see and who knows, maybe mine will end up on someone else's list, LOL!

  6. While deciding what to hang where, lay out on newspaper on floor and then number rough shapes on paper and frame. This saves a lot of energy and misplaced photo's :) Laura

  7. I really like the photo walls too. I have a (very) small scale version in my hall with old black and white photos of ancestors.

  8. Check out www.wallpepper.com. They are removable wall photos and actually fairly inexpensive. They are kind of like giant sticky notes, only with your photos on them. A friend of mine owns the business and it's pretty neat. You could put up a picture or 2 of your favorite WIsconsinite. LOL

  9. I like the second one, big frames little photos. I would do something more out of the box, but then that is me. I would photo copy the photos and wall paper them to the wall over lapping like a collage, then hang empty open photo frames. But I am an out of box person. Love everyone's ideas though.

  10. I like the first one you showed; it's very nice. And you've seem my Mom's wall of fame in the dining room; it's just too much!
