WHAT BIRD IS THIS

Sorry for the fuzzy picture, this bird landed in the yard while I was edging last weekend and I had to quickly whip out the camera and snap the picture before it flew away.  I'm assuming a Heron of some sort?

It is called a "Cattle Egret".

He/she hung around for a little bit, picking around in the grass and then, as quickly as it arrived, it flew off.

It was definitely fun to see something different at the farm for a change.
I hope we get a return visit sometime.

  1. hey 1st Man - as you know, jam loves birds! he's not terribly familiar with Texan birds, but he says that based on the look of it, it is an egret, crane or a heron. now it's up to you to go and identify it properly! cool, though, that it landed and hung out for a bit!

    your friend,

  2. Hi 1st Man
I live in central Illinois and we have birds who look just like this along the Mississippi river ....they are egrets. I don't know if they also live in Texas.....maybe google can tell you for sure.....happy bird hunting! :)

  4. Yep, "Cattle Egret", we have flocks of 15-20 following our cows sometimes, and huge flocks when hay is cut. They prey on the bugs that are disturbed by grazing and hay mowing.

  5. I was going to say "cow bird" because they love to hang out in cow pastures and on cow's backs, eating bugs I assume. They are pretty birds. but can be annoying too. I live in N' Ga. so I guess they are pretty common birds.

  6. I think it is an Egret. They are beautiful creatures............but be careful if you have a pond with loved fish. They can wipe out all fish in a small pond in just a few days. I live in the western part of Texas where the Sand Hill Cranes migrate to. They spend their days in the cotton and maze fields. I have always loved watching the cranes and listening to them call out. Last year one discovered my small pond and ate half of my beloved fish. Every thing I tried could not make it leave. I finally had to lay all sorts of heavy fencing and posts across the pond to prevent it from getting in.
