PLANT CRAZY AT THE GARDEN CENTERS

This past week was a great one for shopping...plant shopping to be more specific.  I went plant crazy at a local nursery chain we have, Houston Garden Center, as evidenced by the image above.

I stopped in Home Depot for something else and decided to roam through their garden department.  I found a whole table of perennials, $2.00 each.  I got 4 Blue Plumbagos, 4 Black Eyed Susans, and 4 Lantanas.  Then I went to Houston Garden Center (ad above), where they have a 70% off all plants sale!
I bought 2 Mexican Firebush, 2 Purple Rubellia, 2 Balloon Flowers, 2 Firecracker Plants, 2 Durantas and 3 pots of Cannas (2 bulbs in each of several varieties).

Perennials
Then I went to another location a few days later and bought even more!

More perennials
I bought 2 Oleanders, 3 more Lantanas in different colors, 3 Mexican Heather plants, 2 Pentas in different colors, and 2 Esperanza Yellow Bells.  I still need to find some Texas Sage, but that's on the plan for this weekend and/or this week during my lunch break.

I purchased almost 40 plants and spent less than $70 total.  Even though each was priced differently that still averages out to less than $2 per plant.  Now I just need to care for them (watering them daily, keeping them in town) and once Fall arrives, along with its cooler weather, I can start planting them.

Hoping next Spring will be colorful and beautiful, like so many of the inspiration pictures I find every Thursday.

  1. good haul, now will the little car carry all those plants at once to the farm????

Just be sure not to plant the oelandars near the neighbors fence where there is livestock, it is poisonous, they shouldn't bother it but have heard of people throwing it over fence and feeding to neighbors animals causing problems. Just take care where you plant it.

    1. LOL! It PROBABLY will, but we'll use the bigger Jeep to get it all out there, ha. I know one thing for sure, the little 'zen cart' will haul them around the property, ha! Yes, I knew that of all the plants that was the one that I had to watch out for. I had planned to put it just in the middle of the yard far away from any possible animals.

  2. And watch where you plant the plumbago. It will grow into a monster and spread, a very unruly plant.

    1. Ha, I have seen a few large ones and I just love the unusual blue color. I think a lot of these will be right around the house to cover up the flaws and give us some cottage garden color but we'll have to see. Down the driveway would be nice too.

  3. Such a great haul. I 2nd the planting of oleanders. I wouldn't plant it anywhere out there....plant it in town. I have known animals that have died after eating the leaves. Don't know about the plumbago. We've had an enormous amount of rain 2.8 inches in a couple of hours. It was flooding everywhere in my area.

    1. Thanks for the reminder, you have me rethinking it, and I might have to put it elsewhere. 2.8 inches of rain? Oh how we'd love to have that. I know you need it but not the flooding.

  4. That was a great haul. I found hibiscus trees for $1 each at Lowe's, reduced from $35.

    1. $1 each???? OMG I might have to hit Lowes on my lunch break and see what they have. Thanks for the heads up. They do freeze down here in a hard freeze but hey, I'll take any color I can get.
