OUR DIY BAR STAND REVEAL

Last year, I blogged HERE about wanting to have one of those bar stands or carts that you see so often in magazines (click on the link for some examples). Well it took some time to find the right pieces and put it all together but we did and over the last couple of rainy weekends, we were finally able to put them all into place.

First up, we had this 'dead' corner in the dining room that just cried out for something like this.  The obvious solution would have been a corner cabinet of some sort, but I wanted something a little bit different.  So one day, at our favorite furniture store NADEAU, we found this end table. It was the right color and being round meant it fit the corner perfectly.  I just knew that I could do something with it.

We couldn't have a lonely table with a big empty space above it.  So a few months later, I found these awesome subway art prints.  There was one for red wine and one for white wine.  I figured they would work out perfectly above the stand and would visually fill the corner with some much needed height.

Next up, I didn't want bottles scratching up the wood surface so I found a glass table topper.  It's the kind that goes on those round decorator tables that you can buy and put a tablecloth over.  Somehow, some way, it was the perfect diameter to fit the top of the table.

Then we started looking for the accessories.  First of all, wine glasses and then the mixed drink type glasses. A blender and some tools came next.  Followed by a pitcher and of course, last but certainly not least, bottles of liquor.  Once I had everything I thought we'd need, it was just a matter of putting it all together and voila...

Bar cart / stand
...here is the final result!

It will need some tweaking as we begin to use it, but for now, it is what it will be.  I thought about putting wheels on the bottom, it would be very easy to do, but rolling it across the not so even, old floor boards, loaded with breakable glassware and bottles, might not be such a good idea, LOL.  We'll put a few more bottles of liquor on it, and a few more bar tools.  We're trying to stock up on the basics like rum, gin, vodka, whiskey, scotch, bourbon, tequila etc.

We love it and hope that it will serve its purpose well.

  3. 1st Man,

Now you've made a blank empty space into something very nice.
A little bar with pictures, I love it.
Did you pick up these pictures at Hobby Lobby?

  6. You've done a great job equipping the farm but here's my question. Do you ever stay over there? have friends over? I never read about any entertaining that you do there. Is it just for show for now on the blog?

    1. Ha, great question. We (one or both of us) is there every weekend almost without fail. There's always something to do. We also stay out there a couple times a month overnight. In fact, I have a couple of night posts to put up. I've had a few blog posts about dinners at the farm or breakfast. As for entertaining, no, haven't done any of that, at least not for dinners. We are still buying things we need so we can cook out there and entertain. Also waiting for the outside to be a bit more finished. We have no place for anyone to sit outside, no fire pit yet, not chairs on the porch except the two rockers. We've had friends over many times for day visits, berry picking adventures, tours by friends who want to see it, etc, but as I said, no big dinner parties yet. We still need a new toilet, and with only one in the house, that's important! Ha. It's things like that that are still be worked on. The big picture looks finished but it's far from it. Heck, we don't even have sheets on the guest bed , ha.

So yes, for now, It's just for "us", and let me tell you, we enjoyed the bar last time we were there, LOL. It's a slow work in progress. :-)

    2. Noticed a few spelling errors, I was typing that reply on my iPad, apologies, ha. Hope it all made sense. I was going to add that it's a slow work in progress and we came up with a multiyear plan for the farm, I have a post coming up about that. Since it's not our home full time, and we aren't close to retiring yet, we have plenty of time. We want a few years of slowly getting it created and then we can entertain and enjoy the fruits of our labor.

  8. Hello 1st and 2nd. I love the bar, I remember when you said you were going to try to come up with something. Nice to see what you came up with and it's a great solution.

Thanks for your reply to Marcia, at first I thought she was being mean, but I think I understand what she was asking. I've been following you since almost the beginning and I know it's a slow long process like you said. But I think I even commented once that you don't have to be in a hurry. This is your retirement place, take your time and make it your dream. Keep up the good work. You both inspire ME to want to create my dream place. Perfection doesn't happen overnight, right? HAHA

    1. Well hello Becca, thanks for your kind words too. To defend Marcia, I never once thought she was being mean, I think I understood her to just wonder if we were having any parties out there yet or not. And I don't often talk about going out and spending the night, because invariably it's just a quiet night at the house. I think I've posted often about weekends there and when I auto post the Sunday poster, it's because we're there and I don't have easy internet access so they just post automatically. Then when i get home I post an update. Many of those meals I show were composed at the farm.

Yeah, like I said in my other reply, a) we're doing it for us and our future, and b) it's not ready for entertaining more than maybe a couple of friends. We need more seating outside on the porch, we need to replace the toilet, and invariably when we try to cook, we find out something we need that we don't have. So we're just making it slowly and steadily, ha.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. I can't wait to build my own...with coconut water, green tea, little boxes of dark chocolate almond milk, kombucha...and a bong.

    1. Well now there's a combination! You know, I tried some coconut water recently and there was just something about it I didn't like. Not sure why. Maybe I should try again.

  11. Love it! Definitely add some wheels and maybe some handles to pull it? The handles could serve double duty and hold your towels. Pier 1 and World Market both have some pretty neat barware accessories that won't break your budget.

    1. I thought about the wheels but the floors are just so uneven. BUT, the idea of some handles to use as towel holders is great! You know, I haven't been to a Pier 1 lately either, great idea, thanks!!

  12. Love it! Though you have a great selection of booze, you need to add a little Irish whiskey (Jameson) and rum (Mount Gay)! Two of my favs for whenever I come to the party!!

    1. You're right, we don't have any Irish whiskey, I'll work on that. Now we do have some Rum, it's Texas made and really good. You'll have to try it...at the party, ha.

  13. Seriously, this is one of the best projects you have done. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!!!!! And those pictures above it. It’s like these pieces were MADE for that corner!

I wish WE could have a bar sitting like that. With young people in the house, you gotta keep the alcohol at a minimum otherwise they are too tempted. :-)

    Kudos! Great job!!!!!!!!!
