...this creature was hiding underneath.
To say my heart skipped a beat or two would be an understatement. I'm sorry to say, it is no longer among the living.
I googled it...striped bark scorpion. This one is a Texas variety but all bark scorpions are similar and found all over the Southwestern United States.
Other than this, and a minor back strain unconnected to this event (that is much better today), it was a good weekend. Hope you had a great weekend doing what makes you happy!

DeleteWe were on hols once, for AGA's birthday in rural Italy, and woke to find a scorpion strolling around the ceiling above our bed! After the screaming and jumping around had lessened, he/she received a one way ticket to scorpion heaven.

DeleteI was surprised to find them here. The first one spotted was a wee little thing on some wood we were collecting for the fire. Since then we have found bigger ones, one particular one at my feet in the bath tub. I suspect it came up the drain. Still not very big though, just over an inch at best.

DeleteI've seen one black widow here, in town, inside an upside down clay pot that I picked up first by sticking my finger in the hole and flipping it upright. Yikes! Scared the crap out of me.

DeleteFor some bizarre reason, we had a bunch of these set up in our attic, and that wouldn't have been so horrible (since we are rarely up in that fiberglassed, dark, cramped, creepy place), but they would occasionally fall through a light fixture, INTO THE BATHTUB! Not wanting to break my leg, or mentally scar my grandkids when the inevitable happened, we had the pest control guy blow diatomaceous earth up there, presto, end of the scorpion family. They can have the great outdoors, but not anywhere that has access to my tub!

DeleteI jump ten feet high whenever I see these things! When I was a kid, my parents added on a bedroom for my sister and me - really big and nice and pink with new furniture - we couldn’t wait to move into it. Until we kept finding these scorpions in it. There must have been some scorpion eggs on the wood they used to build the room. We moved into our kid brothers’ room - and we had 3 kid brothers! - for the whole summer - until we were SURE they were exterminated. Now that’s being scared - and desperate!

It's the first one we've seen but I know they must be everywhere out there. I can't imagine them in the bedroom all over everything. Yikes!!
DeleteI'm actually kind of fond of scorpions-especially the moms carrying the teeny babies around. And I get a least 2 a year in my bed-I've gotten good at flipping them out before they can get upset and sting.
ReplyDeleteIf I have to choose between a scorpion sting and a wasp, I'll take scorpion. They make my tongue tingle(like tiny bubbles!) for the next 12 hours. Wasps just itch like crazy for the next 3 days.
In the bed....that reminds me when I was little, we visited my grandparents in Oklahoma and my grandma, every night before bed, would say "check the bed for stinging scorpions and spiders". Great way to go to bed and have nightmares Grandma, ha.
DeleteBeen stung by a few wasps in my life, if the scorpion is not as bad, then maybe I won't be QUITE so afraid of them.
OMGosh 1st man;... I found one of these horrible creatures on my kitchen window today!!! I don't have harsh chemicals in the house, so while squealing like a little girl and dancing in place; I emptied half a spray bottle of my homemade orange peel and vinegar cleaner on him. LOL LOL It did slow him down long enough for me to grab a shoe and "do away" with him. I can handle snakes, spiders etc, but scorpions scare me to death!!!
