RANDOM WEEKEND UPDATE

When we got to the farm on Saturday morning, it was 54 degrees inside the house.  Considering the overnight low was in the 30's, that was relatively warm.  Of course, with the daytime high heading into the 70's, it was still a good day to open all the windows.

I explored some of the property on Saturday, finding this old mesquite that I hadn't ever gotten close to.  When the Winter freezes push vegetation back to dormancy, it's always a good time to go exploring. Mesquites are usually spindly and not very large...this one has to be decades old.

Remember the photo that startled me a few weeks ago HERE?  Several of you asked what it ended up being and this is it...just an old branch that had fallen out of the tree.  Boring!

The garden cart had been leaning up against the house but I guess it somehow had fallen back down into regular position.  It was on the edge of the house, where there is no gutter and so all of this water came off one corner of the roof in the middle of the rain we had.  This has reminded us that we want to have some sort of rain harvesting system in place this year. We hope to do something similar to what Leigh did over at

Today I got to spend time on the Zen Machine.  Yep, had to mow!  In February!

Here is the driveway after...a lot of the green is some sort of clover, but hey, it's green, we'll take it this time of year.  As you can see, the trees are still mostly bare...but we have a feeling Spring is just around the corner.

Hope you had a great weekend!  Don't forget, giveaway ends tonight and midnight (Central Standard Time).

  1. No, not boring at all. It was a great little mystery. I DID NOT want it to be real! But, it was a diversion that was not on TV. That "person" gve us all a chance to use our imagination. Thanks for noticing and sharing then and now.

    1. Ha, thanks for that. It's always a bit of fun to use our imagination isn't it? I remember one night in town "seeing" a man, in a cape, hanging around by some bushes, late at night. Next day it was a towel draped over some trash bags someone had put out. Ha.

  2. We had temperatures in the low 50's this weekend. Although our ground is soggy, mucky mess from all the melting snow and subsequent rain. Spring can't get here fast enough for me!

    1. I absolutely did. It's not in the way it's not bothering anyone, and I'm sure it's home to all sorts of things. :-)

  7. 1st Man,

It's beautiful out today, the grass is a bit wet though. We're not able to cut it yet.
We have plenty of water sitting in the rain barrels outside ready for watering the garden.
Time to expand the garden this year. Plenty of feedlot panels, soil, peat, and compost waiting to be used.

    1. We were wet on Friday, but it got warm enough Saturday and Sunday to dry up nicely. I got a LOT of good mowing done.

I remember your awesome rain barrel idea, that was on my list but I'm not sure I'll get to it this year.

  8. It sure was a gorgeous weekend! So nice to enjoy the sun and some warm days.
Your mesquites have so much character. I love all their branches’ unique twists and turns.
So the mystery “person” in the woods has been revealed! I can see how that fallen branch could look like one!

    1. Wasn't it beautiful? Mesquites are so interesting, sure they have thorns and can look scraggly, but they seem like old souls don't they?

  9. Brr, 54 seems a little chilly to me and we keep our house pretty cool overall.

    1. We only have space heaters in the farmhouse but they warm it up quickly. Of course, the day got up to 70's so it wasn't cold long, ha.
