SIX POINT STAR AFGHAN

OK, I know a lot of you out there like to crochet, knit, quilt, etc and so I just had to share this latest thrift store find.

It's one of those thrift stores where items have one price through one date, then if it's still there on another date, the price drops.  Then it drops again a couple weeks after that.  You can see what the date is on the price tag.  I saw this one day, on a Friday, and it was $24.00.  But after Sunday it would drop to $12.00.  I decided to take my chances and go on Monday at lunch.  It was still there!

SCORE!

Six point star crocheted afghan
This looks like a six pointed star quilt (I believe that's what this design is called?).  In fact, when I saw it on the rack from a distance, that's what I though it was.  Instead, I realized it was a crocheted afghan.  It was folded up and hanging on four hangers side by side to support the weight.  It's HUGE.

This is on the queen size bed at the farm, and it hangs off the sides.

Large afghan
...and it's folded in half!
We're guessing it's actually king sized.

Afghan closeup
Here is a closeup of the crochet detail.  It is made up of so many different colors too, we can only imagine that it was a tremendous amount of work for the person doing it.  It had been hanging there on the rack for almost three weeks before I first saw it and no one wanted it.  There was just no way when I saw it that I could have taken the chance that it didn't make it to a good home...and that home is ours at the farm!

We zipped it up into a bag that a comforter once came in (we save those bags) and put it up on the shelf in the closet.  That will keep it safe until we use it.

Anyone have any info on this style of afghan?

  2. That is really pretty and I know it must of taken a lot of work to do. Plus, I bet it is also very warm. You find the prettiest things at the thrift stores where you live. I don't usually find anything but junk! I do find cheap wine glasses occasionally and I always pick a couple of those up because I am forever breaking them. After breaking a couple of really good crystal ones, I rarely use them anymore except for special occasions.

    1. Definitely warm. We are lucky, maybe just being such a large city, there are so many people donating things to thrift stores that there is a wide variety. Of course that same large population means you have to be quick, LOL. I see wine glasses often too.

  4. You are a bargain bloodhound! This is a gorgeous work of art! Just think of the great amount of time that some person spent creating this beauty. So glad that you ‘rescued’ it and it’s now at your Farm where it will be appreciated.

  6. so pretty and a great patten. It looks like there are all different colors too, like none of them repeat. It's crazy how much work was involved in that. You scored a labor of love for sure.

    1. Yes, it's hard to keep track of when I looked at it all spread out but it does seem like there are different colors in every square. I'll have to check that out sometime. Labor of love is a great way to describe it.

  7. Lucky lucky you!! I would have fought you for it!! I can crochet fairly well, but my endurance or lack thereof would not see me do a project of this magnitude - it's just exquisite. So suitable for the farmhouse - well done! (makes you want to know the story behind the piece)

    1. Oh my gosh, same thing here, (not the fighting, though I might too, ha) but we wonder the story behind these things. Who made it, was it for a gift, a special occasion, or what. Alas we'll never know but it might be fun to make one up, ha.

  8. It is gorgeous. And I would happily have joined Rose in fighting you for it. There is a HEAP of work in it, and it is beautiful and functional. What's not to love in that?

  9. Gorgeous, although I would refrain from fisticuffs... now if we're talking Aladdin lamps, that might be different.
I love thrift stores; once found a handsewn pieced and appliqued queen size quilt, in perfect condition, for $5.00! Have used it for 11 years now. =)

    1. Heck it's big enough there is plenty to go around, ha. Aladdin lamps, they are awesome huh? Have never seen them, though we do have two that belonged to my grandparents once upon a time.

Aren't thrift stores fun? All sorts of treasures.

    1. Aww, thanks for that. Maybe it's just luck is on my side. Of course, when I don't go to thrift stores, I often wonder what I missed. Maybe it's best to just think of what's meant to be, ha.

    1. Ha, that's ok, thanks! Isn't it pretty? I think I could have paid twice as much for it and still bought it.

  16. I'm with Rose, that is a LOT of yarn AND work! I crochet also and I know how much time went into this gorgeous piece! $12 wouldn't even buy enough yarn to make a twin size.

  17. I dub it "The Afghan of Many Colors", just like "The Coat of Many Colors". Fantastic thrift store find. I'll agree with Linda, to just buy the yarn would be more than you paid. And, I'm a hoard too, when it comes to those zippy bags. Have a Great Weekend. M
