FIGHT FOOD WASTE, VINTAGE POSTER SUNDAY

Fight Food Waste, vintage poster image courtesy of wikicommons
This is a fascinating poster image.  The USDA put this out for the Bureau of Home Economics, and as they always do, it promoted conservation.  It also had a bit of a military tie in, for WWII, with it starting out "Join the Ranks"...but then the words are as true today as they were then.

"Buy to save, Serve to save, and Store to save.

Fight Food Waste in the Home...it's funny that I found this image, just the other day, 2nd Man and I were noticing that when we see some of our neighbors trash bins (this is in town and we have to line them all up in front of our house once a week, lucky us, ha) there is so much food that is thrown away.  I couldn't tell you the last time we threw away food.  We either cook small enough batches to eat it all at one meal, or we put up what we don't use to save for future meals.

We can only imagine what stores must throw away...

  1. We have zero food wastage I'm proud to say, curtesy of the chooks and the compost. I hate waste of any kind. Our motto is recycle, recycle, recycle.

    1. Now THAT is awesome to hear. I have a great metal sign that I need to put up in the mudroom at the farm, it say reduce/reuse/recycle. And the sign is made of recycled metal, ha.

  2. Yep, it's really sad about the amount of food that some people waste. And it’s so unnecessary if people would just put a little thought into it, like y’all do. I love freezing leftovers - it's like a free meal later on. And all the vegetable-fruit peelings go into the garden compost.

    1. We love freezing leftovers, it's a great quick meal when you don't feel like cooking or are in a hurry, right? Compost is great too.

  3. If we make casseroles in the typical 9x13 pan. We usually only eat about 1/3 (dinner & lunch the next day). We always freeze the rest in 2 person meal size portions. I have chicken dressing casserole & enchiladas (they freeze really well!) in the freezer from the last couple of weeks. We hate to throw food away too!

    1. Isn't it great? And it's wonderful on a cold day when you just want to pop something in the oven. Enchiladas sound good right now, ha!

      Stay warm up there!!

  4. There seems to be such an emphasis on conservation in so many posters you give us. I wonder when and where we all went so wrong.

On another group I posted 3-5 times each week what I pulled out of a grocery store dumpster. Think bout this--I got from $75 to $150 worth of edible food. I did not climb in! I gave food away to others because I could not eat all I got.

    1. What a great way to put it. Where DID we go wrong? Somehow we lost our way over the years (well, not all of us of course). Maybe it will come back around eventually, just hopefully not before it's too late.

I have often wondered about grocery store dumpsters...I bet SO much is thrown away that it perfectly fine. So sad. Good for you though in helping!!!

  5. Food wastage is true over here as well. Sad and bad.
I compost vegie peelings and freeze dinner portions for later whenever I can. I really, really like being able to go to the freezer and pull out a dinner I know we will enjoy on lazy nights. Bonus.

    1. Part of me is glad it's not JUST an American thing....but sad nonetheless. :-(

Isn't a quick dinner a great bonus on a lazy night? Love it!!

  6. A cool rung about working in the non-profit sector of the world is that I get to see things others may not There are food banks that make arrangements with stores to collect their excess food which is sold at a seriously discounted rate to agencies like the domestic violence shelter where I work I'm not saying they don't waste stuff, but not as much as they used to.

    2. Now THAT is good to hear. Maybe things will gradually come back around. Every wave begins as a ripple, right? And such valuable work you do, helping so many women and children. The world needs more people like you!

    3. A new phone? At least it didn't change it to something really bad, ha.
