Dang it....noticed this weekend that we lost one of the two fig trees we have.

We think what happened to this one is that when the guys were clearing the backyard, they backed over it. It looked like it was just bent and so it was propped up and staked. For a few weeks, it seemed to be recovering but it must have had more damage than we could see. The other one planted nearby is doing fine.
Time to find another fig tree! I guess there could be worse things than having to go fruit tree shopping. Of course, we can't plant now, it's far too hot, but I can baby it along until the Fall. And if I happened to "stumble across" a few more fruit trees, well, who knows what I'll have to buy.
It may well grow from the base again cut back to were you find green wood give it a feed and plenty water and see what happens, I wouldnt have thought backing over it would have killed it
ReplyDeleteI wil look for some green. It was bent back pretty far and I think it might have cracked way down at the base but when it was propped back up, it sort of hid it in the grass. We'll see, I will check it out, thank you!
Deletefig trees are really resilient. i bet it comes back! i have ones i totally gave up on and they came back. they grow from the root again. i'd leave it and see what happens. i had one come back this year that i thought died 3 years ago.

DeleteDon't give up hope just yet. It might had gone into deep shock from planting like most trees and plants will do.
ReplyDeleteIn the mean time, cut the dead stuff off and keep it watered and it just may come back next year.
Eventually you just may see new shoots popping up at the base.
To protect young trees from the weed eater; get an empty plastic water bottle or a 1 or 2 liter plastic soda bottle, cut off part of the bottom as well as the top. Now make a cut all the way down the side of the bottle and just slip around the trunk of the tree. Will have less chance of hitting the tree trunk and damaging the bark or could also lay some bricks around the base of the tree.
I will do that. It's not in the way so hey, it's worth leaving as is and waiting. Nature is pretty resilient isn't it? Love the idea of the 2 liter bottle, I've been trying to come up with something for when I weed eat. I am thinking of the rocks I'm brining out too, put in a ring around each tree. It would look pretty and I could put some mulch in the middle to help with water retention.

Definitely life, nature can be fickle, but also surprising, so it might come back. :-)
DeleteAs the others have said, there may be hope for your little fig tree. I had one severely damaged by a deep freeze several years ago and it came back from the roots. But hey, don't let this stop you from browsing the nurseries for more trees - :) !!

DeleteEchoing everyone else. Fig trees are hardy. It may well come back, or sucker from the base. Don't give up yet. Though any excuse to go to a nursery is a good excuse...

DeleteWhen your fig trees begin to grow you can lay a lower limb down and cover it with dirt. They will root. We have shared many starts from Dad's fig that way.
ReplyDeleteOurs does go dormant and comes up from the roots or from the previous year's limbs depending on how cold the winter was.
Gardening, sadly, is like every thing else, win a few. lose a few. You will find what works.
