GARLIC AND STEAK A WEEKEND UPDATE

You probably thought it was a recipe, ha!

This is the garlic bed and they are doing great!  They'll be in the ground until May or so and then I'll have to figure out the next steps after pulling them up.  I stuck my fingers in the ground around one and felt a nice sized bulb so that's exciting!  Yeah yeah, I couldn't resist.

And this is the meal I came back to after planting the fruit trees.  
Good old steak and potatoes...



Here's the radar image from Saturday at just about 1pm.  The red dot is the farm and yes the rains came...


I got the trees in the raised beds (quick view through the window) and tied them off so they wouldn't blow over but it rained toward the end and I had to rush to finish.  I'll have an update on all that tomorrow.  


In fact, look at this, here is the radar again, 24 hours later, at 1pm Sunday, and yep, it is still raining even today (no flooding though, it's coming slow and with occasional breaks).  Sunday was a day of staying inside and planning the Spring garden, which, weather permitting, will start taking shape this coming weekend.

  1. Hooray for rain. Nothing, but nothing beds a new plant down better.
    I smiled to hear that someone else gets impatient and pokes around under ground.

    1. Yep, I'm sure they are all settled in nicely. And yep, those underground growing things (sweet potatoes, carrots, garlic, etc) I love poking my finger into the ground and feeling them there. It's so exciting.

  2. I am curious. When will you turn the water back on so you can start staying weekends again?

    1. Water is back on, did that a couple of weekends back. I didn't stay this weekend because of the weather forecast, had to be back at work for a meeting and couldn't take the chance on getting stuck out there because of the rain/muddy driveway, ha. Once the weather is normalized, there will be more overnights. ;-)

    1. We'll be waiting a couple years at least but it will hopefully be fun watching git happen. And it was a nice steady rain.

  4. Had nice gently showers off and on yesterday; mostly off and what we did have was really nice.
    Today; wind blowing like crazy but if you ever noticed, we Always get the winds after a rain.
    2nd Man, you out done yourself again preparing a nice meal for 1st Man. You need to give cooking lessons as I know one guy who sure could use some
    lessons..................my hubby. A cook he is not. Have you ever heard of a man who doesn't like to BBQ?
    Your fruit orchard is going to look real nice once they grow up / mature.

    1. It was windy today wasn't it? I'll pass the word along to 2nd Man. I don't know what it is he just LOVES to cook. Lucky me, right? Ha.

  9. You did a great job on planting your orchard - and just in time to get watered in by the rain.
    Love your garlic bed! What variety did you plant and when did you plant them? I think I may try growing them.
    That supper you came home to - mmm! 2nd Man was spot on again!

    For supper tonight, I had a wilted-lettuce salad (a few pieces of bacon with sautéed shallots poured over lettuce) and my last head of broccoli. I’ve been giving away the last of my lettuce to everyone because it is fixing to bolt.

    1. Can't go wrong with meat and taters, right? Your salad sounds yummy. I love a nice salad with bacon. Sauteed shallots sound delish!!

      It went in end of October...so end of April should be the time we start looking for it to be ready, about six months. It's LORZ ITALIAN, a variety that's supposed to be a great for our climate. We'll see in a few months!

  10. Hi 1st Man :) Your steak looks SO YUMMY!!!! Did you plant the garlic in the fall? This year is going to be my first major garden (in containers since I'm renting) and most of my plans are for a traditional summer garden, but I've been reading a book on 4 season gardening and I'm interested in that as well.

    1. Hi there! Sorry for delay in reply. Yep, we planted garlic that was best suited for our area last November. I'd like to look into 4 season gardening here too. We have different "intensities" of seasons than you but there are things that can grow all times of the year.

      We're excited about the garlic it will be May(ish) when we harvest. Fingers crossed!!

  11. My gramma who had the greenest thumbs of anyone I've ever known, was always putting a finger in the soil and checking out any growth she couldn't see ... it apparently doesn't make any difference ... her stuff grew like made all the time.
