BONUS LAND CLEARING FROM THE COUNTY

Went to the farm and was surprised to see this had been done:

This is at the front of our property, along the road.  The county came through, as they do every few years, and cleared the "right of way" they have for the power poles.  You don' t have any choice, they just do it because that is what the easement is for.  They come in 10 feet from the property line and just cut it all down.

The purpose of course is to keep the trees and brush away from the power poles/lines.  The one about midway down looks like it's a bit close but it's just the angle.

The good thing about this is that we have been considering having a new fence put all along the front.  And of course part of the expense for that would be to clear this area first. Now that's been done for us.

The next time I mow, I will begin going over this on a regular basis until it just becomes a grassy strip much like the green space around the house. Then when we get a fence put along the front, it'll be much easier for that to be done.

Thank you to the county!

  1. Plus, now you know where not to plant anything.

  2. Make sure that when you place the fence it is clear of the easement the power company and any other utility has. Plus in some counties you have to have a fence so many feet from the easement.

    1. There is, believe it or not, an old fence there, they do allow it to be along the front edge of the easements since it's all rural area. They only put height restrictions on the fence. Since it's rural, people just have posts and barbed wire or something similar, ha.

  3. I agree with Tomato Thymes and those trees and bushes that are on the other side will keep on growing!

    1. I think those they didn't get are sort of around the fallen over fence. We'll have to have the fence removed and then I'll have to clear it all but it's ok, shouldn't be TOO hard. For now I'll mow this area and keep it down. Then I can work my magic with the weed eater or something similar.

  4. Are you sure it was the county and not the electric co-op? We have a fence along the road within the easement and appreciate the co-op clearing what we can't keep cleared.

    1. You are right!! It was the electric co-op! I was thinking that was part of the county but I asked 2nd Family and yep, the co-op. Thanks for that so now we know. We do appreciate this for sure.

    2. The co-op will also clear under their lines that go to your house and other structures. They cut down a couple of volunteer trees that were growing next to the donkeys' barn. Co-op rates are higher but they do take care of their lines and their customers. Check out their website for rebates and free house energy audits (we just had one).

  5. Yes, be sure that they don't object to you having a fence along "their" easement. Sometimes the power co. just keeps cutting farther and farther back onto your property. I have fought with them for years about this, as our house is adjacent to the power line which is on my property. Of course they have an easement which they take full advantage of and then some!

    1. Wow, I'll have to keep an eye on that. 2nd Family has lived there for years (more than 25) and they have the property on the other side of the driveway from where I took the picture. They'll have the details. Thanks for the advice!!

  6. Just notify them that you'd like to know if they plan on using chemical herbicides to keep it clear. We found that out the hard way and had to sign a paper to prevent the usage of them.

    1. That's scary! I have neighbors that are poison happy.

    2. Oh wow, more great advice. Thank you!! I'll ask around and call the co-op. Don't want any poisons use for sure. I'll mow it for them I'm fine with that, ha.

    3. Parsimony, We would hate to have a neighbor just wildly spraying poison everywhere. Ugh.

  7. Good for you to have someone else clear what you wanted clear anyway!

    1. I know right? It was a blessing for sure. I told 2nd Man I have a new "clearing project" using the mower and some old fashioned muscle. It's not unlike other areas I've cleared and kept cleared. Of course it's ALLLLL the way at the other end of property. A quarter mile from the house, ha. At least I can just ride up there on the mower.

  8. We have the same thing in front of the house, except they dig ditches to help the snow melt. It's useful but my gosh, so darn ugly. Glad you saw an upside to it! A fence is a great idea!
