PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY FRIDAY FOOD DEBATE

It's time for the "Friday Food Debate" where we tackle some of the burning questions of the culinary world...LOL!

This week, the burning question is:

So, here we are again with a divided household.  2nd Man and I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  Hey, what can we say, we're kids at heart.  It's comfort food.  And it's even better when you have homemade bread, your own canned jelly and you use a Vitamix to grind peanuts into fresh peanut butter, but I digress.

So the debate is this.  Some people take the bread, lay the two slices down and spread peanut butter on one slice and jelly on the other slice and then simply put the two pieces together. (2nd Man)

Other people will spread the peanut butter on one slice and then spread jelly on top of the peanut butter and put the clean slice on top. (Me)

So...how do you PB&J?
Separately or together?

  1. PB&J sandwiches...…..Nope, not for me. I will spread peanut butter on toast and jelly on toast; just not together.

  2. It's separately & wait, what's that I hear? Why, it's the moderator hitting the buzzer. Bzzz! Debate's over!

I mean, c'mon, 1stMan, how do you keep the peanut butter off the jelly spoon or visa versa if someone else wants to make a sandwich or you want to make a second?

Surely you don't[GASP!] mix all the PB residue you picked up while spreading jam on top back into the jelly jar on the second pass?

Of course not! Are you some kind of heathen?? ;-0

    1. My father left PB residue AND bread crumbs in the jelly jar. It was quite off putting.

  3. Jelly on one slice, pb on the other. And always place the pb side on top of the jelly but then reverse it to eat it because I think there is some ancient law somewhere that says to eat it the jelly must always be on top. It might be the same law that says pb& j sandwiches have to be cut in quarter butterfly shapes.

  4. Peanut butter and then jelly on toast, open faced. Get your own knife.

  5. I would die (no I'm not allergic) before I ate peanut butter!! I can't even stand the smell of is, it makes me gag. I HAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it!!! So I guess I can't answer your question as you wont even find it in my house. Fortunately DH feels the same way, phew!!

  6. I've never been a fan. The closest I get is peanut butter with a little honey drizzled over it, with white bread. Jelly for toast!

  7. I'm with 2nd man. The reason is you can control the even spread of each therefore not getting a wad of peanut butter or jelly in one bite then the next nothing but bread the next bite!

  10. If you would like your life changed in the nicest of culinary ways you MUST try peanut butter with sliced ripe banana sandwich. Trust me it's to die for...

  11. I think Elvis did! That was partly to blame!

  12. I'm of the together variety. I spread peanut butter to the proper thickness, then get a spoon and spoon on enough jelly and spread it around. If you get it right, you don't have to worry about getting peanut butter in the jelly, haha. Janie

  13. Never eat them together!
    Not Australian.

  14. Peanut butter then topped with jelly. All on one slice, so it's an open-face PB&J.

  15. I don't PB&J. I don't like them together, maybe because I wasn't raised with them. We ate peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and after supper sometimes we had one slice of bread with grape jelly on it. My mother told me once that her Norwegian mother gave her children bread with butter and sugar on it. Mother said, I didn't do that with you kids.

It's probably for the best that she didn't because I would still be eating bread with butter and sugar. Sounds pretty unhealthy.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. That's the way I do it, too! I prefer orange marmalade with the crunchy pb.

  17. Together of course! It's the only way.

  18. I'm definitely with 2nd man on this one. Except PB on one slice spread thickly with a knife, then use a spoon to put JAM - not jelly - on the other slice. NEVER double dip the knife from one to the other. ::shudder::

Blueberry jam is the best, followed by strawberry if no blueberry available.

And the sugar on buttered bread was a HoJo (Howard Johnson's) thing.

  19. When the children were small and I still do this, I spread a thin layer of peanut butter on one side of each bread then spread a nice layer of jam or preserves which was canned. The bread did not get all soaked with the jam, which my children said was so messy and was too moist to handle for school.(embarrassing) NEVER JELLY. Oh, how about home made bread...

  20. I usually do it the same way that you do but it's not 100% sometimes I do it the other way. Now however I prefer a peanut butter with creamed honey sandwich. Homemade jelly (we say jam) is always better!

  21. Ohhhh, I just made one and I toasted the bread and then put the peanut butter on one slice and topped it with the jam (St Dalfour's red raspberry and pomegranate). Perfection.

  22. My husband taught me that PB&J's always, ALWAYS start with cinnamon-raisin bread.

Toast two slices to a nice light brown. Using a knife, spread Jif non-crunchy peanut butter on one slice. Using a spoon, spread seedless blackberry jam (Bon Maman) on the other slice. Bring the slices together and proceed to have a party in your mouth. You're welcome
