OK, here is the "mystery fruit" that we are growing. It's supposed to be a Flordaking peach tree.
The deer or birds got the fruit that had developed but we snagged this one before that. We put it in a paper bag for a few days so it would speed ripen.
It had a very small amount of fuzz but not much like a peach would. It smelled very "peachy" though...
We sliced it open. The flesh was a pale orange, almost white. There were bits of red around the edges like you'd normally see in a peach.
The pit also looks exactly like a peach pit.

We sliced it up and ate it. Delicious for sure! VERY strong peach flavor, sweet and, as you can see above, juicy. We loved it. Now we wait until next Spring for a bigger and better crop. But now comes the big question:
Is it a peach or a nectarine?
Peaches do come in the yellow as well as the white varieties. Not for certain, but I think the seed of a nectarine is much darker than that of a peach. I say that you have a white peach.

Forgot to mention up above; the nectarines have smooth skin and peaches have the fuzzy skin
Deleteit looks like a nectarine that I have had in France. Some are white and some can be really dark like a blood orange in the middle.
ReplyDeletelooks like a nectarine to me.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a nectarine, but if it feels like a peach, tastes, like a peach and has a pit like a peach, I would just call it a peach and not worry about it.
ReplyDeleteDamn good question! I thought nectarine at first, but that pit makes me think peach...a hybrid maybe?
ReplyDeleteI know nothing.

With some fuzz on the skin, I think that indicates it is a peach. Since you couldn't let it ripen naturally, that could influence its appearance. I googled this variety and it's a a low-chill, early-fruiting variety that is good for the coastal Gulf area, so it should do great at your Farm.
ReplyDeleteIs bird netting in the budget?
ReplyDeleteWhatever it is, second man needs to make me a pie out of them. Ship it Priority mail to Illinois ASAP.
ReplyDeleteRight one Donna on the bit about a pie. :)
DeleteI'll take a cobbler, send C.O.D. by over night express.
Nectarines are just a kind of peach, they're not a separate fruit. I'd say either your peach tree has gone back to it's rootstock or it was never a Florida King to begin with... (Peach trees are usually grafted onto a different rootstock, and it's possible the rootstock has overtaken the graft.)
ReplyDeleteGlad it's delicious, anyway!!
