TURKEY DEAL

Well look what I found...

Clearance turkeys!

After Monday's turkey post HERE, I mentioned that we might do one more if we found some on sale and sure enough, I stopped at the store and found the rest of their fresh turkeys on clearance for 39 cents a pound.

Scored a 13.5 lb turkey for $5.26.  Not too bad, especially for a fresh turkey.  I picked it up at lunch  and it will be dry brining soon in the refrigerator.  I wanted to buy several but alas, we don't have the space for all that meat in our freezer (but at the farm, we'll be planning space for a large freezer.  If we can get 5 or 6 more bags, that will give us plenty for future meals.

For everyone who asked the other day, I will be taking step by step photos of our process from unwrapping to roasting so we'll have a post on that coming soon (probably Monday).

You can't keep me away from a sale!

  1. That was a fantastic deal! With all of that pre-cooked and portioned turkey in your freezer, preparing some great meals will be a snap.
I looked at my HEB today and they didn’t have any fresh turkeys, just frozen, and they weren’t on sale.

    1. Scored this one on the Monday after Thanksgiving. They were all in an end freeze bin. It seemed like the frozen ones weren't on sale, only the fresh. Probably because frozen can still be sold but the fresh had an upcoming "use by" date.

Yes, we love having the turkey for several meals, one being the wonderful pot pie he makes. And then I make a turkey tetrazinni casserole that's good. Since we have so much, we're going to try it in some different things too (turkey meat tacos perhaps? Ha).

  2. What a heck of a buy! Boy, did you ever stop at the right time at the grocery store. Can't beat a sale like that. I think I would had bought a couple of them for that price.

    1. I almost bought two but I don't think we'd have had the room in the fridge OR the freezer with the meat. But we've got a lot of meat now. Someday at the farm we'll have a big freezer.

  3. Can I ask what is the plan of the farmhouse? Renovation or a new build. Curious.

    1. Hello! Yes, the big question. We've been back and forth with options. But now I think we've settled on a hybrid of both. We've had some people out for estimates to just do several major things (new roof, new siding, new plumbing etc). After the holidays, we have a contractor coming to see about a complete interior renovation with an addition (the addition being the kitchen/utility/dining room). I guess in the end it will be close to a new build but hopefully more on the affordable side. Should start to get some infant decisions to make early in the New Year.

  4. When the day comes you get your big freezer or any fridge/freezer for the farm, plan on it being in some area that can be cooled in summer, heated just a bit in winter. Many of us here had a garage fridge and they don't insulate the garages so they are hot hot hot in summer... the fridges don't like it ... plus they wear out in shorter time than normal. And they really don't come on enough in winter since the garage is sometimes barely above freezing.. Word to the wise!!

    1. Yes, definitely. We'll have a utility room with vents for a/c and heat. Have also heard no windows is good to keep it temperature controlled if you have heat and a/c. We'll plan for that. I want us to be able to store canned goods and bulk food like rice, etc. We'll see this in mind, thanks for the first hand suggestion.
