This is an overdue post.
The peach tree (replacement) was finally planted...several weeks ago! We forgot to post about it but it wasn't planted in this super heat and drought, in fact, look at the grass...it was still green then, ha.

It took me a couple of weekends. First, I had to get the old one dug up. It had technically died and didn't come back for two seasons. I cut it down last year in anticipation of getting a replacement. Then it sprouted back at the base. Oops! Can you grow a peach bush? Well, whatever it would have become, it never would have bloomed because the new growth came in below the graft which means it no fruiting.
Better to start fresh...the peach was the last one on our list to plant in our orchard area.
After it was gone, I had to let the bed sit for a couple of weekends while watering it. That way, I could get get the soil loosened as well and manually pull up any extraneous roots that were still in the ground.
I added soil, turned it all to loosen it and then planted the tree in its new home.

Here it is a couple of weekends later. Looking good after being in the ground and it even had a few small new leaves coming out. When we water all the trees, we give this one extra water so it helps it in this heat. So far, so good!
We know it's still a couple years away from fruiting but at least we're back on track for peaches. You all might remember THIS POST from a few weeks back when we got some peaches from a coworker's tree. We love them and hope ours grows the same way and we'll eventually have enough for some peach cobblers!
Don't know where you purchase your trees, plants, etc. but always good to check their warranty on perennials. Home Depot is only good for a year but a nursery like Calloway's are a lifetime guarantee. Bring in your dead tree; leaving about 2 feet of the trunk attached with the root section attached along with your receipt and they will in turn give you a store credit.
ReplyDeleteWe had bought 3 trees that the nursery planted for us; 2 survived but 1 tree didn't make it ; we dug it up and cut the upper part of the tree off and took it for store credit.
Remember, this is for perennials only.
We have plants yet that need planting, but keeping them in part shade until the temperatures cool down somewhat before we plant in the ground. Watering at least 3 times a day. Quote from nursery lady;" water a little, A lot". Water a little at a time but water several times during the day if needed.

I do keep our receipts now. The peach tree that died though was from several years ago, maybe 4 or so, so that wouldn't have worked but yep, now I have a box in the shed where I drop them "just in case" ha. Yeah, this one was probably put in the ground when it was a little warm and sunny but it's in there now, I just have to keep it happy. So far so good in this crazy drought. Same with the pomegranate, it's doing great too. The fig has lost some leaves but it's putting on new growth so I guess we're ok so far, ha.

DeleteSomeone may have already suggested this-I got shrubs and blueberries through the 2011 drought by using buckets with a tiny pin hole in the bottom or lower bottom. Fill the bucket with water and it will slowly seep out and continually water the plant. (such as the large orange Home Depot buckets)
