NEW HOUSE TEASER DOOR CHOICES

Who knew you had to choose doors and windows?  I mean, we just thought, yep, it comes with doors and windows, how much do we need to decide?  Apparently a few things, ha.

First up the doors:

Of these three designs, we liked the first one, the horizontal smooth the most.  Didn't really like the roundtop either plank or without.  Kind of ranch or log cabin vibes.  We thought the horizontal smooth that we liked might just be a bit contemporary.

Then we were shown three more.

The 6 panel textured was nixed right away, too formal.  So in the end, it was the last one, the two panel square top smooth.  The design looks like the doors we had in our last house and still conveys old.

2 Panel Square Top Smooth ✅

We had to decide on two things after this choice; hollow core vs solid core and then 6 feet or 8 feet tall.  With our ceilings being 9 1/2 feet, we felt 8 foot tall doors would be nice and large and make a great statement.

8 foot tall

Then it was a no brainer for the other choice, we wanted solid core doors.  Our house in Houston had them (being built in the 1920's) and our apartment has a couple of hollow core doors, and we just don't like the lightweight feel of those.  With them being so much taller, it would be noticeable in the feel of opening and closing a door.

Solid core ✅

Then we were told "but wait, one more thing...what kind of doorknobs do you want?"  In a perfect world, we would have loved glass doorknobs like we had at our old house.  They didn't have that option though.

I don't have the pictures of the options, there were colors and round knobs and curved levers, but in the end, we chose this style:

It's a lever style with a square backing.  Contemporary but also kind of old school in a way.  One advantage is that when your hands are full, you can use your elbow to open a door.  Hey, you never know!

We could always upgrade later to glass doorknobs and swap them out after we close and move in.

Square Plate Lever Style ✅

Oh, and what color?  We have decided on black doors.  We know, probably not for everyone but with the colors we chose for the interior rooms, we think black doors will look pretty.  Kind of like this:

It looks cool, even when paired with wood furniture.  It's kind of new and old at the same time.

Here's another look.  Again, clean, contemporary but classic at the same time.

Black doors ✅

The color we chose is Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black.  It's a black black and will be very dramatic.  As luck would have it, when I was looking for photo examples of black doors to show y'all, check this out:

This is our door style WITH the lever handle like we chose AND in Tricorn black.  Wished they had a wider-angle picture but hey, we'll have it in real life in a few months and then you'll really get to see it, ha.

Anyway, that was our door journey.  Next time, WINDOWS.  Who knew there were so many choices for that too!

  1. Building a house is not for the weak!
I really do like your choices. And kudos for choosing the solid core doors.
Right now I am toying with the idea of painting our bedroom one of Sherwin Williams soft blacks. I am still undecided while waiting on the big color samples to arrive. Once I see them in the different lights the room has I might boot the idea entirely, but who knows.

    1. Yes, solid core we knew from the beginning we wanted. More expensive of course but better in the long run. I've seen a room in person (a study) that was black and it was SO pretty. It's a bold choice but wow it looked great. Of course, I think decorating choices with the black can make all the difference.

    1. Yay! We had never thought about black doors until we started seeing pictures and we really like it too. And yep, Tricorn black is the new big black color. We saw a house painted black (not sure if it was tricorn) and for as odd as it might sound, it was a beautiful with all the green trees and grass around it. A potting shed might be a great way to incorporate that!

  3. I love the first door best. And, those lever doorknobs always get caught in my pockets or tear my clothes. I suppose I should not walk so close to doors. Good choice on solid core doors. I know you are having fun. I have mentioned painting to Tommy and he did not shut it down immediately.

    1. The first door was a close second. In the end we thought it just might be a bit too contemporary and we wanted something that matched the exterior doors more. Never thought about that with lever handles, I can see where that would happen. We'll have to remember that. You should just paint one day when he's gone, ha.

    2. My house was built in 1902 and the oldest door in the house is like the first one. So, I am surprised you think it looks too contemporary. Maybe I don't know what i am talking about. It has happened.

  4. My first choice would have been number one but getting the one you have chosen in black saved it for me. I approve of the handles and although I adore glass doorknobs I think these might be keepers. I like the clean lines with the door. Anyone would think this is my house we are discussing but I think many of us are living this along with you.

    1. Awww that is too kind. Hey, there will be lots along the way, we've only just begun, ha. Number one was close but honestly, us seeing some in black sealed the deal. The lever handles look great with the color and the lines. Fingers crossed! I can't imagine when we have a finished house and can share a zillion pictures!!!

  5. You both are making some wonderful choices.
I really like the contrast of the black looking doors and hardware of the door handles.
Hopefully you won't have the popcorn ceilings.
Enjoy your day and have a wonderful evening.

    1. Thanks! We know sometimes choices are so personal and not for everyone but so far we think we haven't strayed too far from normal, ha. And NO popcorn ceilings, ha

  6. Your choices are just beginning. Wait until you get to the kitchen cabinetry! Lever handles are great! We have them here now too in our 1839 house. In the Lodge we built in 05 all the doors were lever.

    1. Oh we've already gone into the cabinets and countertops. Lots of posts for that info. :-) I love that you put the levers in your old home. Glad to hear you like them and would do it again.

    1. Thank you for this! We figured this is it, probably the last house we have or certainly the last we BUILD so we should do what we want.

    1. It is and we're having to make decisions about everything. And these are just cosmetic, we've also redesigned rooms and things so that will be exciting to share as well. :-)

  11. Now Hobart can open the door for himself if he stretches up enough. I think solid door would be a little heavy for him though Just kidding, he would never leave while he is still the boss.

    1. It's funny you said, one of our cats Brisbane (who has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge) use to, if we were in the bathroom with the door shut, would reach up from the outside and put both paws on the doorknob and it would slightly jiggle. We always said if he had thumbs, he could have opened it. With a lever, I bet he would have just pulled it open, ha.
