Not too long ago, I posted this link about using galvanized buckets as luminaries, and I thought it was such a neat idea for the farm.
Well, as I was doing some more online research, thanks to my friend who mentioned the baby food jar candles, and stumbled across this idea:
Mason Jar candles |
It's the same principle, just using Mason Jars instead of the buckets.
In the photo above, they are filled with sand, and then candles of different sizes are stuck in the sand.
Simple as that. I like that you can use jars of different sizes, for a casual look.
Then, I found this photo at an HGTV slide show on their website. It utilizes the same idea,
and this time they have the same size jars and candles.

Apparently, in this one, they used Epsom Salts as the "sand", and it gives it a nice, clean look, almost like snow in the bottom of the jar.
Since they are clear and you can see what's inside, you could literally use anything in the bottom.
We have some large hurricane jar type vases/holders on our dining room table, and I've used everything in them from sand, to salt, to coffee beans, I even used inexpensive aquarium gravel
(from the local pet store) in different colors.
I think we'll definitely have to have a supply of Mason Jars and candles ready for when we need them.
I have a bunch of jars in my basement. They came with the house!! Lots of interesting things came with my house.
ReplyDeleteNow that would be cool, to find a bunch of stuff left behind. There was stuff left behind in this one but since we knew the owner and had been visiting the house for years, we had already seen it all, ha.
ReplyDeleteI was looking for a unique way to have candles as part of my Christmas decorating and came upon your picture in Google images! Wow! I was so excited--I left immediately and bought some epsom salts. Washed my jars...and voila. I have a beautiful centerpiece on my coffee table, and candles on my hearth--in all about 15 jars of different sizes. It's stunning looking. Thanks for the great suggestion!
ReplyDeleteLorieN - Awww, thanks! I love when I can help out. I am heading out this weekend to get some epsom salts for our table centerpieces as well. Thanks for visiting, please come back, I try to post every day. Once we start doing stuff in the house (decorating) and outside (gardening/landscaping) things will be happening fast and furious, ha. Have a wonderful Christmas!
ReplyDeleteGoodness gracious, I wish I had seen this earlier. I've been canning for less than six months now (yeah, I'm a newbie) and have only started my collection of jars... anyway, we had a power outage and I couldn't figure out how to get my long tapered candles (I didn't have votive candles at the time) to stand erect in the jars.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing about it is that I had epsom salts, pebbles AND gravel. Thanks for sharing this fantastic idea, it is well appreciated.
Abramoland - Thanks for visiting and thanks for the kind comments. Hey, sometimes the obvious is the hardest to see. I run into that ALL the time, lol. Love to hear that you're canning. Even though you are only 6 months in, you are way ahead of me in canning. I hope to do get into that heavily when we get the farm up and running. Please come back and visit!
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought of Epson or is it Epsom Salts for filler. For my outdoor jars, I have used sand, but it's pretty heavy and made for a bit of a leaning branch on my Aspen tree. I think this is my first visit. I will be sure to GFC follow. Visiting from I'm Not a Trophy Wife, laura
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for following. We hope we post some interesting stuff, and since we're creating this farm/house from scratch, it's a journey! Yes, i loved the epsom salts use (epson? you're right I've seen it both ways, ha). We did that at Christmas and it was so pretty. Sadly, I took pics and then the sim card died in the camera. Ugh. Lost all the fun christmas pics. Oh well, better and bigger next year!
DeleteThanks again for stopping by!! I just visited your blog (and joined!) and it's wonderfuly, can't wait to peruse through it.
Great idea.I just got a bunch of canning jars from my elderly aunt.Had no idea what to do with them.Thank you kath
