| Mysterious underground structure |
This one is a bit unusual. Don't ask me what draws me to this photo because I don't know. Obviously something does. Maybe the age of it? The mystery of what lies behind the door? Maybe the greenery that is encroaching it? The fact that I was born in Oklahoma where practically every house had a storm shelter of some kind?
I can't remember where I found this picture, but I've had it saved on my hard drive for a few years. When I saw it again, the other day, I realized I had saved it because I thought "oh this would be a cool thing to have some day".
I suppose we could do something like this, albeit not with old stone like this. But if I envision that hill peeled back, there is probably a solid structure with walls of some sort underneath the ground, which was then covered with dirt and planted with grass and plants. Maybe there are some stairs that go down below grade? I just enjoy looking at it and in my mind, I imagine that the inside has shelves lined with jars of canned fruits and vegetables. Maybe even some old quilts and an oil lamp or two.

It looks at the top it had a plaque of some kind,maybe a historic shelter?

DeleteI'd say it's a storm shelter or cellar for food storage. I live in VA where it's easy to find cool, old structures that keep you guessing as to their provenance.

DeleteThat is a root cellar. And some had a spring inside for putting your milk into to keep it cold. We have many of those around our area. There are many plans available to build them online since they do not require much excavating, they are the easiest to build. If you do not live in a flood plain, by all means you should put on on the farm for keeping your vegetables.
ReplyDeleteA root cellar? I kind of wondered if that might be it. I will have to look up some ideas for that. I can add it to the ever growing wish ist for the farm. It looks like it might not be TOO hard of a project in the future. Might require some heavy equipment but I bet it could be done! Thanks for the info!!!
DeleteI agree with Jane, it's a root cellar. They were very common when I was a kid, we don't see so many around here now.
ReplyDeleteThat's so neat. Wouldn't it be awesome if they could just include those nowadays in new home construction? Ha. In oklahoma we had storm cellars everywhere when I was growing up.
Deleteyep - Jane called it first - it's a root cellar. and root cellars were used to store food from harvest over the winter. we have one. put your potatoes in a box with a dark blanket over them in the root cellar - they will last until March. put your carrots in a box of sand in the root cellar - they can last until May. same with turnip, onions and beans. root cellars are awesome!

Yup, hate to burst your bubble (cuz I like your ideas much better), but that's a root cellar. It would be incredibly cool though to build your own root cellar for the farm that had a trap door of some kind leading into a mysterious room or tunnel though.
ReplyDeleteHey that's ok!! I imagined a root cellar type of thing too. I'd love to see the inside, ha. I might consider that someday on the farm. I like your idea of the mysterious room! I plan on doing this blog for years so someday, whatever we do will end up here for all to see! ;-)

ReplyDeleteCharming is a good word! Hey clip away that's how I got it originally, I just saved it on my computer for future inspiration (I was doing pinterest before it existed, ha). Someday it might be nice to show this picture to someone and say "help me build something like this"! ha.

DeleteWell you know a Science Fiction/Fantasy geek and the only thing I could really think of (and yes I know it's a root celler too) was that it was a Hobbit Hole. Having just watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy over the last two weeks I could really think of nothing else. It's not Bag End but it could be a neighbor. Have a good weekend.

ReplyDeleteA girl after my own heart! That's what I wish we could see. I found the pic online a long time ago but there was nothing showing the inside (I would have saved that if there was). So we can only imagine what might e inside, ha.
