INSPIRATION THURSDAY, CANNING PANTRY

For today's inspiration, I'll show you two photos.  This first, on the left, I found a few years back, before we had the farmhouse and, Donna Reed housewife aside, I knew instantly that it was something I wanted us to have, someday of course.  A pantry stocked with stuff we grew ourselves would be the pinnacle of success and self sufficiency.  But really, could anyone do something ilke this today?  Flash forward to this!

On the right is a photo I found recently while looking online for some canning information.  I noticed it was eerily similar to the 1940's version.  YES, it can be done today!  This pantry belongs to someone by the name of 7th Swan.  Sadly, she has no blog, just a Flickr photostream account, but lots of great pictures to see.  Definitely an inspiration to all of us and it's nice to know that it can be done today...frilly apron not required.  Blog day off, see you back here tomorrow!

  1. My pantry isn't even close to that big. It is literally the size of a closet :(

    1. I hear ya. Ours in town is that way. Of course at the farm we have a whole mudroom. All that room for canned goods someday, ha.

  2. My previous house had a basement room with shelves like that, and for quite a few years I kept them full of home canned goods. Of course, I had a big family to feed then, with four kids still living at home. Now I have a small house, no basement, and only two of us to feed............but I still love the looks of all of the jars of food lined up on any shelf that happens to be available for use!

    1. Wow, you must have been busy canning all the time. But I'm sure the family appreciated it knowing how you garden and cook! Aren't they pretty though, all lined up in a row with different colors? So much prettier than "cans".

  3. I thought I could do food preservation like this, but I can't seem to get around to it. My Mother canned. My aunt still does. And, today, visiting me, was my cousin's wife, who has basement shelves that look a lot like those in your picture. Maybe inspiration will strike yet.

  4. O, MY !!!! What a great set of pictures. I wish mine looked anything like that! lol

I have a lot, but my pantries (2 walk-in closets) are a disheveled mess that needs cleaning up in the worst way. I'm getting on it though, really I am. Especially since one of the homework assignments this week for the Food Storage and Preservation class (Sharon Astyk) I'm taking online is to inventory the pantries.

I'll dream of this one though--thanks!

  6. Yes it can be done :O). Its amazing how many jars of food even two people can eat from one growing season to another... Remember when you put in all those shelves in your pantry, use lots of support, jars of food are heavy! :O) Honeyman beefed up the support on our pantry shelves last year as I was worrying after reading a gals blog post where her shelves of jarred goods gave way and went crashing to the floor...

  8. My dad's pantry looks a lot like that... only messier. Interesting thing I noticed! In the Donna Reed-esque picture she has black pull down shades in front of her shelves. What a great way to prevent discoloration from light exposure!

  9. Childhood memories.... Our pantry was the basement. My job was to "run down and get a jar of ......."
