FUTURE PROJECT: FAIRY DOOR IN A TREE

From time to time, I like to share plans I have for various projects.  I'm never sure when they will come to fruition, I do have my priority list of other more important projects this early on in the process, but this blog allows me to condense my thoughts and my research and what I like into one spot.  Then, later on, I can come back here and look at what I found and how I wanted to do it.  This is one of those projects.  It's a Fairy Door.

Future project: Tree fairy door
We have this cool little area at the base of Barnabas the Party Tree.  I had never really focused on what I could do with it, I just considered it an open spot in the tree and never gave it much of a second thought.  Then last Spring, Dani over at one of the blogs we follow, Eco Footprint South Africa, had a post about making a fairy door at the base of a tree on her property.  She mentioned seeing it on another blog too (isn't that how we find all sorts of fun things? ha) so I sort of filed this away in the back of my head.

Then the other day, I was roaming around on the property looking at things and daydreaming and decided this would be the perfect place to do it.  I did some googling and found the pictures below to use as examples;

Love the door on this one, so rustic and looks handmade (by the little people of course!).  It's almost like it's been there for years.

This one is just amazing, it has a whole entryway, a well, even some thatching on the roof.

This one is very ornate, vines growing around the door and and even has a  tiny window.

There aren't really instructions, as every tree is different.  It's really just taking wood and being creative.  This is on my planning list for next year.  I figure this could be knocked out in a weekend, especially since all the work can be done in the shade, LOL.  Of course, this is after I get my garden beds done...and the flower beds done...and the plantings around the trees done...and so on...but I still think this would be a really fun and cute idea.  It would certainly enthrall our friends' children when they come to visit.

Heck, it enthralls me and I'm 40something...

Oh the backstories I could come up with about this, it will be fun!

  1. I like this idea!
I know that I and my sisters would have loved something like this when we were children. My father used to say that the fairies lived in the trees but that there doors were carefully camouflaged to hide in with the dark. The time we spent searching and then feeling fairly certain we had located the hidden doors in the trees in our garden!

I say:go for it! Place it first on your next year to-do list and don't forget to post us some photographs.

It has given me ideas for when that magically day comes and we have our own place to have fun with.

    PS
I do like that last one you showed. Very fairytale-ish!

    1. Ditto here! I would have imagined all sorts of wondrous adventures when I was young. Oh, I will totally post pics about it. I even found a scrap of wood already that might be perfect for this. I just need to figure out how to attach it, how I'm going to weatherproof it and of course accessorize it.

Your day will come soon, i know it! Thanks!!! And yes, i'm pretty partial to the last one as well, though with my shape of tree I might have to get creative. But some things are brewing!! ;-)

  2. I have a window seat in my kitchen and years ago I painted a small window onone side, made a tiny door and painted a tree with a little swing hanging from a limb. I called it the mouse house and on the little post box I printed 'Mouse House". Inside the window seat I put little resin mouse people and some small furniture. My g'children loved it and any child that's ever come to my house has been found, at one time or another, down on their belly looking into that hole. since there is a nightlight inside they can 'observe' the mouse family. Still tickles me although I can't get down on my belly anymore (well, I could but I couldn't get back up!)

  3. teehee. i have faery doors on trees and other places all over the Manor - and faery windows. i also have faery salvation army stores.....they are just small rocked in areas where i gather moss and little bits of fabric and put it in....then the faeries can make clothes from the fabric. the fabric pieces are always gone so i am sure that the faeries are well- dressed! and they use the moss to line their beds and pillows.

(read: birds take the fabric and moss to make nests)

faeries have been written about and spoken about and sung about since the beginning of time - that alone means that they simply MUST exist. and we are happy to have faeries here at the manor.

as for the faery well that i mentioned in your previous post...use your bricks to build the well either 4 bricks around or 8 bricks around - do you know what i mean? then build up. but not too high. then place a container of water in your well for the faeries (and birds) to drink from. faeries (and birds) need lots of clean water just like us.

lastly - i drew a faery door on the outside of our house, and matched it inside of the house. that way, if it gets too cold, the faeries can come inside. i drew the same on both sides of our outside basement door.

faeries are real. they are magic. they bring love, health, beauty and are very close to God. anyone interested in faery doors is a sure friend of mine. i am glad that you and 2nd Man are such faery-interested creatures!

    your friend,
    kymber

  8. I like the first door. It does look like it has been there a long time. Perhaps handed down through the centuries.

    1. I never thought about that, but I like that back story for it. Hmmm, maybe I'll have to come up with something like that for ours? Handed down through the centuries. :-)

    1. I wish I could claim credit for it, but I guess people have been doing it for years. Now we just each make them our own based on what we have available and our trees. Definitely do one if you can. And check out, in the comments above, MandaBurms' pinterest finds, she has even more doors she found online. So cool!

  10. I love it! I'm partial to the third door, with the ivy. I can just imagine opening it to take a peek, and being greeted by a little mouse! (I wrote this before I read Dindin's post!)

    1. Well, that makes it official, the third one is the most popular, ha. I know, can't you just see opening it and seeing what's inside (no SNAKES of course). ;-)

    2. I agree with Annie*s Granny. The little mouse home. In fact, after seeing this post, I'm feeling the need to create my own fairy home in the large old Pecan tree on my property. It has the perfect size hole for a fairy home. (smile)
