BISCUITS AND SAUSAGE GRAVY, THE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

This is one of my favorite breakfast traditions, and on Superbowl Sunday, this is what I was treated to...first 2nd Man makes and rolls out some dough for biscuits...

...then he gets out the cast iron skillet, browns some sausage first and then mixes in flour and milk to create a delicious, thick gravy.  Then we just have to wait...

...until the biscuits are finished baking and pulled out of the oven.  Then you have a sheet of hot biscuits, a pan of sausage gravy and you put the two together...

...all you do is grab a couple of hot biscuits, pull them apart, pour the sausage gravy all over the top of them and sit down to enjoy.
Sigh.  Now I'm hungry again.

This is kind of a Southern thing I think, but I'm hoping I'm not the only one who loves this hearty breakfast treat?

  2. 1st Man - i think it is a southern thing - i had never heard of biscuits and gravy for breakfast until i was visiting the states a few years back. i have never tried it - the pictures of it that i have seen always make me gag a little but i would try 2nd Man's! i am glad that you enjoyed your traditional breakfast.

oh and if you have time, post his recipe for the biscuits - they look delicious and fluffy! your friend,
    kymber

    1. Ha, I understand. It's really good though, trust me, ha. I'll try to pin 2nd Man down for the recipe. I think he really does just wing it, but I'll see what I can do. :-)

  5. Not just a Southern thing. It has been my favorite breakfast for as long as I can remember, and I'm not really a big fan of pork sausage. That was very mean of you to post it though, since I'm still on my diet. For some reason, the gravy being made with skim milk and Morningstar Farms (fake) sausage and served over multigrain diet toast just doesn't hold the same appeal for me :-( I'll just sulk off and drown my sorrows in my oatmeal with flaxseed.

    1. Flaxseed? Fake sausage? Skim milk? Multigrain diet toast? You are a stronger person than I, ha. Though probably much healthier! :-)

  6. That does look very good but I'm thinking how to make it lower in fat. Turkey sausage, skim milk, whole grain bread? Might have to try it some time soon.

    1. Yes, I joke with Granny, but sure you could use turkey sausage, and I think skim milk can still make gravy right? You should try it, it's yummy!

  7. i love this for breakfast and though it is traditionally southern, lots of restaurants serve this for breakfast way up here in the north!

    1. Isn't it great? It's a comfort food, that's for sure!! Cool that they serve it up North too. :-)

  8. Wow that looks so good! Nothing like I have ever had for breakfast. Just wondering, are your biscuits what we call scones? That is what they look like to me.

    1. Thank you! It's hearty and filling for sure. Biscuits here in the states are fluffy, flaky and ideally have lots of layers. 2nd Man makes scones too. It's definitely a denser, heavier dough. I love them. But I love biscuits too....

  9. Not just a Southern thing--it's quite popular here in the Mid-West, too! Crystal, a good biscuit is fluffy and flaky, not as dense as a scone.

  11. I am truly southern, but have never found a biscuit recipe my family likes. Okay to be honest I don't like biscuits, but they love them. I would be tickled to make this for Pooldad for all he does for me - and those biscuits look PERFECT. Do you think your lovely Man would be willing to share the biscuit recipe? I deal in pinches and a dash of this and that, so I don't need exact if that's a memory recipe for him. But I sure would like to try it. The gravy I got. ::grin::

And after looking at those pics' I am hungry too. Alas, no biscuits.

    1. I don't like biscuits either, if they aren't the right kind, ha. He does pinches and dashes too, I'm going to work on him and see what we can come up. Or maybe the next time he makes them, i'll stand in there and right things down, ha.

Gravy isn't always so easy to make, even as simple as it is. Glad you got that one down. You're halfway there!

  12. Love it! Biscuits and gravy make a good meal anytime of the day.

Have you tried it with some green chiles, omg....heaven. Especially if you use Hatch green chiles.

    1. OH MY GOSH! I never thought about that. And we have a bunch of roasted hatch chiles we've been hoarding, er, kept in the freezer since last Summer. Thanks for the tip. Next time!!

  15. I have never liked white gravy at all. I do love any brown gravy. Most biscuit and gravy where I eat it here in the South does not have lots of sausage. This Southerner does not like grits, either.

Those biscuits look delicious. I cannot make biscuits like that at all. I would like to put some scrambled eggs and bacon in those biscuits.

    1. I know some people like that (or the opposite, like white not brown). Thankfully, I'm an equal opportunity gravy eater, ha. Southerner here who also hasn't developed a love of grits. I'll eat them but not my favorite (unless it's doctored up with cheese and all sorts of other things, ha).

I'm on board with the bacon and eggs in the biscuits as well! LOL!

    1. LOL, it looked like enough for an army huh? Actually it was for just two of us, but we knew that there would be lots of biscuits left over and there were so i took them to work on Monday and they were scarfed up there.

Nice hearing from you, all our best to you too!

    1. Yes, he makes them just sort of 'on the fly' and it's hard to pin him down on amounts of ingredients. But next time he makes them, I'll be in there with pad and paper (and camera) and I'll come back and post! :-)

  20. growing up we used leftover gravy or made gravy and put on our hot cakes. We were traveling to Mt Rushmour and there was a barn cafe with a all you can eat breakfast bar. I let the guy know I wanted hot cakes with gravy , please. He had never heard of that. We also made white sauce and added shrimp , we put it over potatoes or toast for dinner when we were at home. It is fun to learn of different meals others grew up with. Are you going to post the recipe for your biscuits? Thanks

YES, recipe coming soon. 2nd Man made them this past weekend but I was asleep for most of it, ha. He promises he'll write down the recipe (or at least dictate to me) this weekend. Watch for it coming soon!! :-)
