INSPIRATION THURSDAY, WATER TROUGH POND

Trough Pond, photo courtesy of houzz.com
OK, this is something that one of you lovely readers mentioned in a comment recently.  Making a galvanized trough into a water pond.

I would love a pond at the farm, but realistically, that's a ways off, too much other immediate stuff to do.  BUT...if I could find one of these round water troughs, this could be done pretty easily.  I even have a spot I'd love to put it, on the front corner of the porch (on the ground) where the two stairs come off from each direction.  There is even readily available electricity coming off the porch so I could aerate it or add a fountain or bubbler.  This photo will inspire me when the time comes.

Be inspired!

  1. Any farm supply store has these. Big R, Farm and Fleet, or on line. Get the pump at the same place and GO FOR IT. Then post it. Full sized ponds are too much work anyway

    1. Cool, there is a farm supply store that I see but haven't been in yet. This looks like a pretty easy project with a nice payoff in return. I have heard big ponds are a lot of work. I'd still like one SOMEDAY but for now, I think i could live vicariously through this one (or do this one and then go, 'um no, don't want a big one afterall', ha).

  2. I have an old hand pump water pump thatI turned into a water feature. Love the sound it makes. Try your local feed store, tractor supply or even harbor freight.

  3. You can most likely find a tub that will do the same job and be equally intriguing. Look at this sink on my blog:

  4. wow! I have not seen a round one that size. Might have to check out our local feed store. We have a faux terra cotta pot(grey in color and a design around it) My husband had one of the welders at work make a copper pipe fountain , we drilled holes in the back and put copper wire through and around the neck of the copper pipe to hold it in place. Our local home depot has the small pumps, we attached it to the bottom of the pipe. WE had a yard stake electric plug with a surge protector (you can buy at home depot) and just push it into the ground and plug your pump to it. Our electrical outlet was on the front of the house and so we had to run the yard outlet to it by the sidewalk. We had a space in the sidewalk where the cord could be placed but we added an outdoor rug for safty. The pattern for the copper pipe fountain : one pipe 18 high,at the top 10 degree angle attach the other pipe. the top pipe has on one end a cap and in the middle a hole for water and the other end of that top pipe angles down for the fountain. At the end of the fountain the tip is cut with 20 angle cut at the end of the pipe. Now the long pipe under water at the bottom is a T with a cap which reduces down 1/4 in for the plastic tube that then attaches to the pump. This was long but I hope in my (girl) lingo it makes sense to someone :) I really like the sound of water as I come to my front door. It is in my front garden near the garage. The hummingbirds love it

    1. That made TOTAL sense. Thank you! We have an outlet near by that we'll have to do the same thing. I love the idea of a copper pipe fountain, copper is SO pretty. Thank you for the info, I appreciate it and I know the other readers do too. Come back and visit soon! Thank you again!
