A PRETTY DAY WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN

Blue farm sky
Saturday was such a great day, cool, no humidity, a breeze blowing and hardly a cloud in the sky.  Just big, beautiful blue Texas sky.

Breeze blowing
So of course, we opened the windows in the house and let the breeze blow through.  When you open them on opposite sides of the house, it gets such a great cross breeze.  The house has pretty much been sealed up all Summer because it was just so hot outside, we kept the windows closed.  So it's always nice this time of year to open things up and let it air out.

Windows open
You could hear birds chirping, the new wind chime I hung on the porch and the sound of the breeze coming through the screens...and a nap may have occurred here, I'm just sayin'.

Here's a funny story.  When we would go visit my Grandparents, I would always take a nap right after we got there (even though I'm sure, were he here, my Dad would say that I was asleep the entire drive up there, but I digress).  My Grandmother had a couple of chenille bedspreads with these giant peacocks on them.  You know those old chenille ones with large ridges in the design?
I'd wake up with impressions and ridges on my face.  It was still a great nap.
I inherited those bedspreads when my Mom passed, they will make an appearance someday at the farm, in all their garish beauty.

Do you like opening windows on a pretty day?  We have friends in town that say "Oh, I NEVER open my windows".  Maybe it's a country thing?

    1. They are neat, but not quite fitting in with the color scheme but they will be fun for a decorating 'adventure', ha.

  2. I open my windows every day, at least for a bit, whatever the weather. I love the fresh air.

    1. Isn't it great? I think it's good for our health. Probably for our mental health too, ha.

  3. I just love fresh air! Every day my kitchen door is open to the garden for the fresh air and so that my dog can wander in and out as he wishes - or lie in the open doorway. I open windows regularly and I like my bedroom window open at night, although I hate the thought of spiders, slugs, snails, etc. getting in (I live in a bungalow so all windows are easily accessible to them.. Yeuk!
Yes, we had chenille counterpanes on our beds too - haven't seen any for a long time now, though. I guess duvets rule.

    1. The farm has screen doors (albeit old ones but that will change when we upgrade the outside of the house) and it's nice having the doors open. In town we don't have screen doors so I don't get to experience that but it's nice.

I hate that duvets are so popular. I miss bedspreads.

  4. Love to have the windows open. I like hearing the birds. I'm still trying to convince my husband that we need a screen door for the front door so we can get a nice cross breeze.

    1. Oh, screen doors are so nice aren't they? I love the birds and sometimes the sound of quiet, if that makes sense. If screen doors are what's what's stopping you from having the cross breeze then that's reason enough, ha. A cross breeze on a nice day is wonderful.

  5. I have huge oaks in my yard. When my children were small, the front door was usually open and a screen storm door protected the house from bugs and animals. However, the floor and up the stairs usually had a thick coating of oak pollen in the spring. There was one block across the street without paving. (why? who knows?). So, dust coated everything in dry weather. It was hard to have a breeze and clean house, a house that did not stir up my allergies. However, I do like the breeze when possible.

    1. I never thought about that. I think we're good though, 90% of the trees around the house are mesquite and they don't give off pollen and other nasties. Of course, back in the Summer of 2011/2012 drought, the dust from dry soil was horrible. Windows shut then, ha.

  6. Never open a window? Unless you are right in cancer alley, why would you not open one??

    1. Isn't that crazy? I don't know if people worry about crime or exhaust fumes or what? I love the windows open. Our windows in town don't open, they are painted shut, so I love being in the country and enjoying it.

  7. 1st Man,
I guess it's just a personal preference. I love opening up the windows, to listen to mother nature outside and help vent out the house.

    1. Perhaps. I venture to say those who try it would like it, ha. It's nice to air out the house, you can truly notice a difference.

  8. Never open windows? That's crazy talk...though come to think of it, I think people who live in new developments tend to do just that. Considering the fact that we don't live in a house with central AC, our windows stay open all summer.

    1. Yep, I think it's the suburbia mentality, don't speak to anyone, don't make eye contact, don't open your windows, etc, LOL. Now I can understand opening for SURE during the Summer without AC. ;-)

  9. I love curtains blowing in the breeze! Temps are great in Dallas too. It feels so great to open my bedroom window at night and feel the cool autumn breeze.

    1. There is something mesmerizing about curtains blowing. Relaxing in a way. I bet Dallas is getting cool quickly! Stay warm!!

  10. Even in the city, we open our windows when it gets cool enough. I'm so glad summer has gone...I can breathe again..... my nose bleed when it's low humidity, but I just don't care.

  11. I open my windows & doors all the time as I love hearing the outside noises and the water fountain flowing. I am careful about when I'm not in the presence of it being open though.

  12. We don't have A/C here, so windows are open all summer. I remember having windows open in my apartment when I lived there. Maybe it is something about the country (grew up in the country) but I love the breeze in the house, the fresh air (sometimes a little overly fresh in the country, and not always fresh in the city) and the look of the curtains blowing in the breeze. This weekend I just put plastic on the windows this weekend. We do this to keep the cold out. I'm always sad when we do that, because I know we can't open the windows for awhile.

    1. NO A/C? How do you survive? HAHA! A fresh breeze is nice huh? I think it's a great idea.
Speaking of, tell me about plastic on the windows? Does it help? You know the farm doesn't have heat but anything I can do to cut down on the the cold coming in would help. Is it plastic on the window itself? Or the frame?

  13. You attach it to the frame with double stick tape. That's if you're using it inside, which is what we usually do. You're supposed to then shrink it with a hair dryer, but with 36 windows in the house, I never do. You can also get a different kind that you staple/nail to the frame on the outside of the house. Did that one year and it was a giant pain in the butt. I usually find it in the hardware section at Wal-Mart.
