BBQ SLOW COOKER RIBS CROCKPOT RECIPE

BBQ ribs, mmm!  Several of you asked on 2nd Man's recent birthday what I made for him since he always makes such great stuff for us.  So this is what I made for his birthday.  He loves bbq baby back ribs and for some odd reason, we never tried making them at home.  I didn't want to mess with the grill at the apartment just yet, so I found some recipes online, modified them a bit and made this.

We have to say, they were so amazingly delicious, we will be having them regularly.

Crockpot Barbecue Ribs
Nothing like a rack of babyback pork ribs and potato salad.  2nd Man LOVED it!  The potato salad was his favorite from the deli, so no recipe there but the ribs.  You HAVE to try them.

Ribs, Coca-Cola, BBQ and a slow cooker
Here are the ingredients:  Pork loin backribs or "babyback ribs".
I cooked two racks (we had one left over for the next day).
1 bottle of BBQ sauce (you can make your own but if you have a favorite it's much easier, we love Sweet Baby Ray's "original")
1 large onion, sliced
1 bottle of Coca-Cola (don't use diet, it's the sugar that helps flavor these)

And...that's it!
Oh, you DO need a crockpot (or slow cooker) of course.

Oil the inside of your crockpot or use cooking spray, this will make cleanup MUCH easier.

Sprinkle salt and pepper over the ribs and then put them in. They should be fresh, not frozen, and just spiral them around, standing them on the rib bone edges.  I suppose you could just layer them as well.  Our crockpot has heating elements around the sides and the bottom, whereas some just have heating elements in the bottom.

Place the onions over the top, nothing fancy just let them fall where they may...

Use ALMOST the entire bottle of bbq sauce (I saved about 1/4 cup).  Mix the coke and the remaining sauce together and pour over the ribs and onions.

Put the lid on and set on LOW for 7 hours.
There is a reason for using 7 hours instead of 8.

This is what it will look like after 7 hours.
Lots of liquid.
CAREFULLY pour off that liquid.

BBQ ribs in the slow cooker
After you CAREFULLY pour it all off (don't drop your ribs!), pour the remaining sauce over them.  They are fully cooked and you can eat them but you want to make them more like ribs off the grill so now you have TWO options.

First, you can leave them in the cooker, cover them and cook on HIGH for about an hour...

OR...

...you can carefully (they WILL fall apart) put them on a foil lined baking sheet in the oven and finish them off that way (which is what I did).

Did I say they were falling off the bone tender?
They were...this is me simply pulling a bone out in about 2 seconds.

Pop under the broiler on high for about 15 minutes.  The ribs have been done, they were done right out of the slowcooker, this just gives them a more finished "off the grill" kind of texture, as you can see above and below.

Slow cooker BBQ ribs
Once again, here they are, on the plate and ready to eat.

They were incredble!!!

Enjoy!

  2. I am going to try this recipe with beef ribs...I found the ones I knew I had in the deep freeze when we moved. (Moving with a near full Deep freeze is not for the faint of heart)
Your recipe looks so good and easy to boot!

    1. It should work with beef ribs, they are a bit tougher, might definitely need the full 8 hours and then an hour to finish off? Let us know, it was so easy.

  4. I've been meaning to try ribs in the slow cooker and would have googled to see what recipe I could find, but now I will definitely use yours. I have a roaster oven, purchased recently, and I'll put the ribs in there at high temperature for the last phase. Thank you for posting!

    1. That should work perfectly. I just thought I'd try and see how it came out and it is perfectly done. I think they would be fine straight out of the slow cooker, the oven just sort of finishes it so that would be optional if you didn't want to dirty up your roaster too, ha.

  6. Yum, Yum. They look really, Really good.
That's pretty much how I make mine, giving them a good rub down with my dry rub, adding a little Smoke Sauce in with the ribs while they are cooking and I also make my own BBQ sauce and use beer (just don't tell my hubby that I use a can of his beer)in place of the Cola.
Easy clean-up when you line your crockpot with those disposable crockpot liners. Can get them liners just about anywhere; Target, WalMart and just about any grocery store has them.

  7. You know, I've been looking at recipes similar to this on the Internet, and no one ever had a really good explanation of how it all went together, it's just sort of the final picture and the ingredients, but now I understand. Thank you so much! Like Marcia said I'm going to pin this too and I hope you get lots of traffic because you are wonderful! By the way, I click on ads so hopefully they help you out! keep up the great work.

  9. We've been making ribs this way for years, it is absolutely the best way for the most tender ribs ever.
Like Colleen, we also use the slow-cooker liner bags. After removing the ribs just tie off the bag at the top, lift the bag out with all the juices in it and toss it in the trash. Cooker is spotless!

  13. We do that with both ribs and chicken and sometimes even cook them on the grill for about 10 minutes before putting them into the crock pot. The sight smoky taste stays with it. We call it bar-b-cola ribs or bar-b-cola chicken. Since the ribs take up an entire slow cooker we only do those for us, but you can get a lot of boneless chicken breasts in a crockpot, so we do it for crowds often.

    1. OOH, that's a smart idea, it gives them the smoke flavoring. And I LOVE the name bar-b-cola. Will totally steak that, ha. And I bet chicken is yummy!

  16. Got a rack cooking now in the crock pot. They don't look what as liquid as yours but then I probably used a smaller bottle of coke. Smell delightful.
