PILE OF HEIRLOOM TOMATOES

Nope, not from our garden (someday!), but we did pick these up at a local farmers market during our errand running over the weekend...

Assorted Heirloom Tomatoes
...now what to do with them?  They are a bit too good to just smash up or roast in the oven.

Anyone have any great tomato ideas?

UPDATE:

This is what we did with a  few.  We didn't have mozzarella and the store downstairs was closed so we just made our own almost Caprese salad with tomatoes, basil, olive oil, salt and balsamic vinegar.

YUMMY!

  3. I am so jealous! We have months till good tomatoes come in. Right now, you might as well eat a picture of a tomato as one from the store.

  5. Those look sooo pretty and delicious!

Simple but good: Tomatoes and avocadoes with olive oil, lemon juice, and balsamic vinegar; salt and pepper.

Tomatoes with Garlic Oil: Sauté some garlic in olive oil. Drizzle over tomatoes; salt and pepper. Sprinkle with chives and basil.

Caprese salad: Alternate slices of tomatoes, whole basil leaves, and mozzarella on a plate.
Drizzle with dressing of white wine, lemon juice, and olive oil; salt and pepper.

  9. If they are heirloom, save some seeds! Dad always let his seeds dry on paper towels then they were easy to plant.

    1. Oh my gosh, great idea, can't hurt right? And how ingenious is it to dry on paper towels? Then you just plant the piece of paper towel in the hole. You're Dad was a smart man!!!

  10. My thoughts the same as Gail. Save some seeds and let them dry really well and once dry put in paper envelope ( not plastic baggies) and label.
I just planted 12 strawberry plants along with 4 more tomato plants this morning.
Was getting rather hot out so had to quit and come in. I still have cherry tomato plant to put in container yet but will do that early in the morning or this evening yet once it cools down some. Needless to say, I got rather pink working outside this morning.
I will be heading to the nursery later to pick me up some white strawberries (Hula Berry) They are white with red seeds and have the taste of pineapple.
Enjoy your tomato feast and have a great evening.

    1. Thanks, I'll try that out. Like I said, it can't hurt, right?

Ah strawberries...I so want to grow some. I need to find the right place (and way to water them with an irrigation system of some sort). I have seen the white ones but never ate them. If you get some growing and harvesting, let us know!!

  13. The mozzarella is my least favorite part of a caprese salad. Yours looks delicious.

I make a killer tomato pie and after seeing your tomatoes I want one.

  14. Cut them in half, put seasoned bread crumbs on top, maybe some thyme or herbs de Provence mixed in, drizzle with EVOO, and bake in the oven...maybe some grated parm too?
