When is a stick just, well, a stick?

So I'm at the store the other day at lunch and saw this package. "Smorstix" it said, in a catchy text spelling sort of way. Perhaps designed to appeal to young people? I was intrigued...after all, the advertising says "easy to use marshmallow sticks".
I looked at the package thinking there was some neat, new invention...a must have for the farm?

Haha marketing for certain. Guess they are disposable!?! Kindling if your in a pinch - haha. I love toasted marshmallows.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm sure with some people, if they get it a bit too close, their s'more "stix" become kindling, ha. And yes, love it here too, though 2nd Man doesn't like marshmallows at all.

DeleteYes it is all about marketing and someone out there will not only buy them but think they are wonderful sticks. I guess people don't cut small hickory branches and peel the bark off of them anymore to use for roasting marshmallows.

ReplyDeleteShoot, I have used an old metal leaf rake to roast marshmallows before. Just straighten out the end of the tines, slip on your marshmallows and you're good to go. Can roast several marshmallows at one time with all the tines on a leaf rake :}
They would be good for craft projects. Now I DO love your idea of an old rake, not a bad idea. I bet you could roast weenies with that too!!!

DeleteActually, I have 3 acres in the country and can cut maple sticks for marshmallows any time I want, but how many people can do that? If you're in a city backyard with one of those fireholders you have no trees to crop for your sticks, or at a commercial or state park campground? Most people have no access to trees they can cut branches from anymore. It's sad, but this is the last resource for most people.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point and something I mentioned earlier too that this obviously fills a need. Hey, the world needs more s'mores, right? LOL!!! And you have maple sticks? Oh how I wish we had maple trees here. I've love to make maple chips for grilling/smoker, etc. We have lots of mesquite, which is awesome (free mesquite!) but maple would be nice too!

When we were kids, we'd just go find a stick under a tree, have daddy sharpen it with his pocket knife, and we'd have the perfect marshmallow roaster!

DeleteI have to agree with Karren, most city folks don't have access to a tree branch. However, we have used coat hangers straightened out when I was a kid. Not the best but it works. Doesn't toasted marshmallows sound good about now?

DeleteMy friends bought metal collapsing Smore sticks. Because they wanted to. They don't have children and are city folk. I use theirs; it's convenient since they are the only ones I go camping with once a year. You should see the cook stove setup; it's pretty awesome! ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds exciting. Hey, whatever works. I'm all for reusable too. Of course with a stick, when you're done with the gooey mess just toss it in the fire, ha. No cleanup necessary, ha.
