OK...time to share. When I was cleaning out the storage unit recently and brought the items to the barn, these two were in there. Here is my artistic side, from many, MANY years ago.
This was my high school art project (30 something years ago). At one point during the semester, we did a drawing (which is the photo below). The art teacher gave us a basket full of emotions/feelings on slips of paper. We had to pull out five of them and then we had to put them into a 12" x 12" pencil drawing.
I ended up with these five:
"Joy/Happiness", "Anger", "Sorrow/Sadness", "Loneliness/Solitude" and "Confusion".
He told me I picked some of the most difficult to convey into a physical representation. Lucky me, ha.
I did my best and there is the end result above.
Then, at the end of the school year for our final exam, we had to take any one of our art projects from during the year and turn that into a 3'x3' canvas painting. I chose the drawing to recreate in paint (I no longer have my "hand study" in charcoal or "flowers with fruit" watercolor so I cannot subject you to those, ha).
At the risk of boring you all and/or embarrassing myself, here are the five closeups:
This is SORROW/SADNESS...
This is ANGER...
This is CONFUSION...
This is HAPPINESS/JOY...
This is LONELINESS/SOLITUDE...

And here is the whole thing, all 9 square feet of it! Funny thing, even today all these years later, my "doodles" while I'm on the phone at work or just killing time with a piece of paper, look much like this, abstract with various shapes, etc.
I'd like to get back into painting one day, perhaps when my weekends aren't all consumed at the farm with yard work...perhaps in a nice little (air conditioned!) art studio building somewhere on the property?
Oh, and I got an A on both!
SATURDAY: No time for a new post, overslept (oops!) and now on the way out to the farm to do what I can do in this heat.
More later when I'm back in the cool.
What a great keepsake. You need to have it framed and hung up.
ReplyDeleteLove all the bright colors.
See, you Do Need another shed; or 2 one to use as an art studio and another shed to do your woodworking in. :}
Thank you, Might have to do that one of these days. It might not fit at the farm but it would look nice at the apartment. Now I just have to convince 2nd Man, ha.
DeleteAn art studio? AND a woodworking shed? Yep, sounds good, can you email 2nd Man and tell him you said it was ok? HA!!!!
What Colleen said!
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks, very kind!!!!
DeleteLove it and so smart of you to hang on to it all these years.
ReplyDeleteI worked on it for a few weeks and it was so big I just had to hold on to it, but it did spend the better part of a decade in storage, ha. My parents kept it at their house for a long time. Glad to still have it.
DeleteHi 1st Man! :) That's so great! I saw the anger right away, you know why? After my burnout, I did art therapy and the therapist kept telling me to paint how I felt. I was angry mostly...and all of my paintings looked like your orange anger, but mine were always black. The other emotions you conveyed are great, well done and you deserved an A!!! :)
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks for that. You are too sweet to say that. Sorry about what you went through but art therapy sounds very curative.
DeleteI love that you kept it. Now find a place to display it.
ReplyDeleteDoes every high school in America's art course require a charcoal hand study? (I may or may not still have mine)
Thank you for that. Our art teacher had us do several projects throughout the year and yep, charcoal hands was one. Isn't that strange? Must be a curriculum that is pretty standard for art.
DeleteBrilliant art work. They need putting up on a wall.

Thank you for that, we'll see what happens!!
Deletehang them up!
ReplyDeleteThanks, will have to work on that. I usually kept the pencil drawing on the back of the painting so they were together.
Delete1st Man,
ReplyDeleteWell done! Yes, I also suggest you hang them at the Farm or at home in the city.
I think in town it would look better. Thank you!!!
DeleteWonderful piece of art! Hang it, definitely. You did a great job since I got all the emotions except "happiness." Of course, I didn't study it properly.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you still have it.
ReplyDeleteI think it is amazing! Definitely frame and display with a sense of pride.
ReplyDeletestand back picasso!
ReplyDeleteAnother wonderful talent of yours! I love all the vibrant colors.
ReplyDeleteVery cool. Isn't there a way to take an image and then make cocktail napkins with the image? That would be very very cool!

That's brilliant! I've been replacing all my old "family" pictures with original art over the last few years and I love the feeling it gives me. That needs to hang in a place of pride!
ReplyDeleteI see why your earned an A. Nicely done. Frame it and hang it somewhere.
ReplyDeleteEveryone deserves to sleep in every now and then. Your body was saying that you needed that extra rest.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend; don't over do it in the heat and stay cool.
VERY talented! Great color and blending is superb. I am hoping you find a very special and prominent place for this on one of your walls. Even though you were conveying several different emotions, the painting over all I think, expresses joy and creativity. It's a bit 'Peter Max-ish'.
ReplyDeletePeople would pay for it because it speaks to them. What I find fascinating is that even the darker emotions are bright. I see that as a reflection of the person I know and love. Your sunny nature seems to shine through most everything you do and say...even when you don't think so. Pollyanna didn't have anything on you!
