WHEELBARROW PLANTER INSPIRATION THURSDAY

Every Thursday we like to post a picture of something we've found online that inspires us to do something similar at the farm.
Sort of our own blog bulletin board so that we can eventually look back and someday, hopefully anyway, recreate it...enjoy!

Here is something I'm just about to ready to do (well maybe when it gets cooler again, ha). We found an old wheelbarrow on the property a couple of seasons ago, in some overgrown brush.  It used to belong to "Ma".  The tire is old and worn out, there is rust in the bottom but how cool would it be to paint it a nice cheery color and bring it back to life...

...As a planter!  Just plop some soil in and plant some flowers (or seeds).  The base has a couple of small rust holes in there so it has some automatic drainage, ha. Anyway, we think this is so pretty and actually the one above, just sort of under the tree, is almost exactly like the one we have now, sitting in a very similar spot under the old mesquite tree.

Be inspired!

  1. Love the looks of wheelbarrow plantings.
Besides having the wheelbarrow standing upright; could also tip the front forward; popping up the back and having what is called 'spilled' flowers to where the flowers look like they spilled right out into the yard from the front part of the wheelbarrow or could do the same by tipping the wheelbarrow on it's side putting in a rock bed with flowers planted / growing around the rocks. Something like this tho you would want to make separate bed for the wheelbarrow and flowers with border stones surround the flower bed.
Plant flowers for the bees and make the bed close to your bee houses once you set them up again

Also be pretty to change out the flowers according to the season; Fall - using mums and adding pumpkins. etc. just by setting potted plants in the wheelbarrow; pots and all.
For the 4th of July; red, white and blue with American flags stuck in and around the plants. You get the idea.

  4. The first wheelbarrow is gorgeous with the brilliant colors of the flowers and wheelbarrow. My wheelbarrow is so damaged that it would have to be repaired to use it like that. AND, I don't want to use just the bed for plants. Your place will be a showplace when you get all these ideas implemented!

  6. I have wheelbarrows all over the place. I have a large, deep one for my mint so that it remains contained, another with my walking onions and the kids had one each with strawberries and herbs inside. We call them their edible gardens and they loved pottering around in them as well as snacking on them. I have also seen people put wheelbarrows on their side, plant inside on the ground and have that spill effect. Not sure if this is in the site mentioned above. It all looks great.

  7. That is really pretty. It's an easy project that will bring instant color and interest.
I did that with my old wheelbarrow - it was a pretty focal point for many years. In another old wheelbarrow, I planted an assortment of mints.

  8. Both are pretty, but I am a sucker for the age, patina and character of the weathered wheelbarrows.
