HURRICANE HARVEY THE DAY AFTER

Don't want to worry everyone.

We made it through the night.  Not much wind to worry about in town other than flooded roads.  The farm however has had some gusts in the area to 65mph. We never lost power but did lose cable/internet for a bit which is why the late posting.

This is after landfall, early this morning.  I put an arrow to the general area of the farm. Very heavy rain and storms out there.

This animated GIF shows what they call the training effect. Look at the upper left where the Hurricane is. The Houston area is under that "band" that just keeps dumping rain on us.  Even though the storm moves a bit, because these bands rotate constantly,  they just keep pulling moisture up from the Gulf and dumping all of it on us. It will clear up for a bit and then become a torrential downpour.

Here is the latest rainfall forecast.

We are in the white and light pink area, so 24 inches of rain or more over the next few days, in addition to what has already fallen.  Potentially 40" in areas.  Several of our bayous are at bank level and in danger of flooding many areas of Houston.  The good thing, if there is one, is that the rain stops for a bit which will hopefully let the bayous do their job and flow water back out into the Gulf.

2nd Family tells us we have had in excess of 5" of rain at the farm and some tree limbs down, but houses seem to be OK at this point. There have been so many tornado warnings at this point, we've lost count.  As I type this in fact, my phone alert just reported another tornado warning!

Our area dodged the worst part that is impacting Rockport, TX and cities around it right now (terrible catastrophe is being reported), but now they are talking about us having devastating flooding here over the next few days the likes of which have never been seen in our city.

That is one prediction they can be wrong about.

It's going to be a long two or three days...

    1. Thank you!! We survived, at least the initial worries of wind, but now we are fending off rains and tornadoes. LOTS of tornadoes today.

  3. 1st Man - If flooding is severe would your water supply be impacted? If a chance of that I suggest that you fill pots / pans / bath to see you through until the supply is "clean" / back to normal. Tinned food I'm sure you've got, but clean water is imperative - especially in a flood situation.

    1. It could be but more if a power failure. Houston proper has build up it's water treatment plants and they are mostly safe from flooding. But during Ike a few years ago (another Hurricane) there were parts of town that had "boil water" requirements for a couple of days due to power outages. That being said, we have good water store up in our guest room closet. Of course we have water at the farm too so if it ever got bad, we could go out there for water. Out there has a well so we're ok with water there always. Thanks for the great advice.

    2. 1st Man - What I mant about potable water availability is IF your water pumps are down because your power grid has been affected, water will not be pumped to anyone in Houston. I hope that doesn't happen... :(

  4. Are your cars elevated? (hopefully)

    Be careful.

    1. Yes, our apartment has a parking garage and the first level is not even on ground level. So we're good with that. If the streets around the building flooded we'd just have to stay here until it receded. I guess another reason to make sure we are well stocked.

  6. Oh what a mess. Lived in Bellaire for eleven years and it flooded all of the time. So much rain down there. We used to be glad in OK, as we'd get some rain from the storms down there. Those two areas of both coasts of FL look ominous. Bet you are going to be very busy these next few weeks.

    1. We are prepared, thankfully. And yep, we're up high so we're safe, but if it flood, we are stuck as there is only one way in and one way out of the building. Just worried about power failure and possible tornadoes at this point.
