COTTAGE GARDEN INSPIRATION THURSDAY

Every Thursday we like to post a picture of something we've found online that inspires us to do something similar at the farm. Sort of our own blog bulletin board so that we can eventually look back and someday, hopefully anyway, recreate it...enjoy!

In a perfect world, in our dream future, THIS is what I'd want the yard around the farmhouse to look like. This reminds me in many ways of my Grandparents house. A cottage garden.  A place to wander around and create and dream.

We know, it's a lot of work getting there and work keeping it looking nice, but oh how it would be worth it in the end.  Hey, that's what this is for, to daydream and plan.

Be inspired!

  1. Have missed not seeing your Thursday inspirations.
cottage gardens are so pretty and this is no exception.
Putting in plants that come up every year will get bigger and also will help in keeping the weeds down and mulching will also help.
Before starting a garden like this consult a well trained nursery person to give you ideas on which plants to plant and plants that go well together and they can also help you in deciding which flowers plants, shrubs, grasses will grow best in your area. You want different variety of plants for color and texture; something for the birds, butterflies and bee pollinators.
You can start out small and continue adding other plants, etc. a few at a time each year and before you know it you will have a very nice, pretty cottage garden.

  2. I love it but all I can think about are the snakes that are probably lurking 'neath the blooms. I can't help it 😥

  3. You might want to check out Bealtaine Cottage on youtube. The lady is in Ireland and has created the most amazing place on land that was just a wasteland 15 years ago. And her cottage is adorable.

  4. Plant your cottage garden and plants in pots. When the garden looks a little barish, plop down a pot of flowers. I read that is how magazines keep everything so perfect looking.

    1. Great plan! I did a similar thing at my mom's house growing up. Part of the pretty expansive border garen which ran up the sidewalk next to the driveway then across the front of the house got to much shade to grow some things. So I did a combo of perennials and annuals. I "planted" pots slightly larger than those I put the annuals in into the ground, then would just pull them out and shuffle them around every few days to keep them all blooming.

I also did the recessed pots along the sidewalk every 2 feet, then put in neon pink geraniums. when I mowed, I'd pick the pots up, put them on the sidewalk, then I could mow right over the pots - no weed whipping to possibly damage the flowers.

  5. What a great idea, it would look beautiful and give you many happy hours of porch viewing.
You could start by finding out what does well in your area and finding substitutes for things you love, some plants may not cope with the temperature extremes so planting trees and shrubs to create a micro climate is something you can do straight away to get them established.
    Have fun choosing.
