VINTAGE JAR AND HOBART RANDOM SUNDAY

A couple of years ago, I was gifted a box of old jars.  I'd been through them and most were just regular jars that were absorbed into our storage of other canning jars, some were just regular food jars (mayo, mustard, etc) that we didn't keep.  But this one stood out.

I stumbled across it again recently and brought it into town to run it through the dishwasher.  It was dirty and dull and I thought I'd freshen it up.  I hadn't heard of Atlas Mason but turns out it's vintage.  It's not really worth anything but as a collectible, it's kind of neat to have.  There was no lid with it but of course the standard regular mouth ring and lid fits.

Any suggestion for something fun to do with it?
Besides the obvious of a vase for flowers?

And of course because everyone seems to love a Hobart picture...here he is napping in the fuzzy tree skirt we had around the Christmas tree.  I put the tree in storage a couple weeks ago but he has adopted this blanket during our recent cold weather.  We guess next year, we're going to need a new tree skirt since this one now belongs to him, ha.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

  1. I have some of these of which pasta sauce has come in.
You can use the jars for canning,(using can jar flat & ring for lid; storing candy in, storing buttons, etc.

"Authentic Atlas mason jars were mason jars made by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, which was in business from 1902 to 1964. Since then, Atlas jars have been made by a different company and are used to package Classico pasta sauces. The original Hazel-Atlas jars only had the Atlas embossed across them to denote the brand as opposed to Hazel-Atlas. While there may have been Atlas bottles created with the same stamp on the bottom after 1964, for the most part, authentic Hazel-Atlas mason jars have a stamp of an H with an A resting underneath. Atlas mason jar values vary between $10 to around $60 depending on a number of factors including the age, color, and condition. The older amber-colored E-Z Seal Atlas mason jars, which were made around 1910, are among the more valuable. Atlas mason jars can be used to package various dry items and those in excellent condition or created recently can be used for canning."

  2. The problem with old jar is that you never know how much clinking around it has been through. The slightest ding that is not visible will yield a jar that might break in the canner. I use these unusual jars for storage I need on the counter or in my pantry. I have never seen one like yours.

  3. I think it would be great for jelly beans or hard candies or, even better ... a highball glass! LOL Anything that does not require very hot water except for washing it!

    1. Yep, he's sweet and warm. As I type this he's on the table behind me, wrapped up where only his face is sticking out. He never likes to be completely covered.

  6. I love using old-not valuable-jars. I suggest you get one of the screw-on pour spout lids. I use one like this when I make my own salad dressings. The pour spout can go on the table and them a regular like to keep it in the fridge. Could also use for syrup.

  7. A great find in that box of old jars! I have one of those Atlas Mason jars from my mama. I keep part of her button collection in it.
Even the mayonnaise jars are good. You can’t can with them but I use them for storing rice, beans, chocolates, etc. I am putting all the odd ball jars to good storage use especially now with trying to buy more per trip at the grocery store to cut down on trips to the store during this pandemic.
Hobart sure knows how to get comfy. That’s a cute picture of him snuggling in his new commandeered blankie.

    1. Oh now buttons and stuff is a good idea. And you are so right, storage is valuable now, more place to store food to keep from going to the store. Thanks! And yeah he's the best at commandeering things, ha.
