It was hot this past weekend...
No mowing |
When I got there, this is what the yard looked like. Definitely no mowing.
At 5pm at the farm it was 99 degrees with a "feels like" of 109. Yeah. It's hot. The weather people say that we are having late July temps now.
Not sure how that bodes for July!
Dry grass |
The grass is starting to die off and with several acres around the house, nothing we can do to water it. It'll come back when it rains. With no mowing and these temps, all I really focused on was watering the fruit trees and bushes. Gave them a lot more than usual.
Drying garlic |
I also checked the garlic. When I opened the door to the barn/workshop, it smelled like an Italian restaurant, ha, but the garlic is drying nicely. Heads are tightening up and paper is becoming husky. You just want to make sure there's no moisture around the heads and then you'll be able to peel off a lot of the dirty exterior husks. Will probably wait another week or so.
Check out this forecast for the week. HOT. Very hot. And ZERO chance of rain.
Sriracha |
And as the title of this post suggests, Sriracha! Not sure how many of you have seen the news about this but the weather in Mexico/California (drought) is affecting pepper production. The company that makes the iconic Red Rooster sauce says no more until "maybe" the Fall but possibly none until sometime next year. I went to three stores at lunch looking for some (we LOVE the stuff). None. So I went to the small grocery out by the farm and bingo! Got some. Now we're hot like Sriracha, in more ways than one, ha!
We're not much on sriracha, but I'm seriously considering a couple bottles of other hot sauces & red pepper spice. Yes, way too early for this heat, and hoping it's just early and not building up to worse to come in July/August!
ReplyDeleteI love it much more than 2nd Man and I never really knew much about it until later in life and love it. There could be pepper shortages that affect other brands too, I didn't think about that.
DeleteI had read the news about sriracha. I did not check the grocery shelves this morning as I have 2 or 3 bottles of Tabasco on hand and it was not on my list. Its popular in NC, so I bet at the first article about a shortage caused a RUN.
ReplyDeleteEven before Covid, if I was looking for hard to find items, I would check different stores in town or other counties when driving that way.
Temps locally have been miserable for us. We get a small break this weekend as the High Pressure pushes back west, then its back to the 90's and humidity next week.
The most recent recipe about backed tortellini(pasta) sounded so good I bought some items. Then it got too hot to turn on the oven.
I enjoy all you updates about the farm. Hope the trees and garlic hang in there!

Hi! Yep it's always good to check less busy stores for sure. Sorry how hot it's been for you all up there, that's unusual too. We understand about the oven issue ha. Thanks for commenting and we are keeping the trees (the fruit trees/bushes) well watered. The garlic will probably be this weekends project to clean it all up if it's dry. In this heat, it should be, ha.
DeleteThe heat index here is 101. Yesterday I spoke to a woman in Texas who said the heat index in her area was 115. I don't feel like doing anything.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Just stay inside where it's cool.
DeleteHOT and DRY – Hot and dry – the weather forecast is like a broken record.
ReplyDeleteI’m hoping that this doesn’t overheat the Gulf and brew some bad hurricanes.
Your garlic is drying nicely in this heat. I love the smell of garlic. But I heard that varmints do not. That aroma in your barn will surely deter any kind of critters that might think of entering.
I’m glad you found some bottles of one of your favorite hot sauces. Although I don’t know how you can bear to eat something in this heat that produces more heat!!
Yes it is. Sriracha is kind of sweet and spicy but I don't find it hot hot, ha. I never thought about the garlic keeping critters out.
DeleteThat is really dry grass. But, I suppose it does that every year at the farm. I think watering the trees extra is a good idea. Maybe you can get your neighbors to water in between your visits. I have never touched one taste of hot sauce of any kind in decades, and certainly not sriracha. You can have my share!
ReplyDeleteWe give the trees a LOT Of water on the weekends so we'll see. The neighbors would be more than willing, We'll just keep an eye on them. The good thing is the fruit trees (except the new ones) are so well established and have deep roots so they are getting moisture deep down.
DeleteNo doubt about it; it's been a scorcher. It's hotter'n a blister bug in a pepper patch.
ReplyDeleteWorking outside is like being in a steam bath. Anyways, you know it's hot outside when you see a dog chase a rabbit and they are both walking. :)
We're not much for using hot sauce of any kind. I have been looking/ wanting certain items for a few weeks now, but with no luck. I figure eventually............Someday, hopefully what I'm looking for will be in stock.........someday I hope.
Will be in the triple digits everyday come next week with not much chance of any rain in the forecast. I hate to think what our electric bill be. Filling the truck up with gas is bad enough.
Everyone stay cool & stay Safe.
A blister bug in a pepper patch...I'm gonna have to remember that, ha. And the dog and rabbit, now that's hot LOL. Lots of things in short supply now. Let me know if you want me to check out the little grocery store in the country, ha.
DeleteThose temperatures must be really difficult to cope with. As for Sriracha sauce, I had heard of the shortage of the US product but we can also get a Thai version here, and so far there still seems to be ample supplies on the shelf. We use it pretty regularly.
ReplyDeleteHello! I bet the Thai version would be amazing. The heat is something we kind of get used to or maybe instead of saying "used to" more like adapt and deal with ha. Thanks for stopping by!
