GUEST ROOM HAS MORE FURNITURE, PART 2

Guest Room
Here is the other piece we brought from storage.  We put it on this wall right as you walk into the guest room and, ironically, it is almost the exact same pale yellow as the Hoosier style cabinet I blogged about yesterday.  It's the perfect height so as to not interfere with the switch, and it fits the wall without being overwhelming.  Once again, almost meant to be.

Jack and Jill dresser
This is a vintage piece that came from my father's side of the family.  It's actually a piece of furniture for a nursery/child's room.  We don't know who owned it originally, they got it from someone who got it from someone.  Then once upon a time, they decided to get rid of it and my Mom loved the vintage style and just had to have it.

But here is the dilemma:  the front has painted images of Jack and Jill.  It might seem odd, but I don't think I have the heart to cover it up!  If it's been this way for half a century, not sure I could paint over it.  But then again, not sure if it looks too odd in there.  What do you think?

Pale yellow child's dresser
Again, LOTS of storage for our little house and we love that.  One HUGE drawer across the top, four more good sized drawers down one side, and then a large open space for even more storage (even a rack for hangers).  It's a bit on the shabby chic side, could use a few touchups here and there, but then again, our house could use a few touchups here and there too, so we'll just leave it like it is.  It adds character to the house.

So with these two additions to the guest room, other than a mattress, and of course the obligatory pictures on the walls, knickknacks, curtains and the bedspread (almost all of which we already have, albeit, somewhere in storage), this room is getting pretty close to being finished.

  1. I would only cover over the front if I hated it. If it brings nostalgia, memories, or looks nice I would leave it as is. Definitely meant to be if it matches the other piece in the room.
Love the bed too by the way!

    1. It does bring memories...and it certainly matches the other piece (minus J&J, ha). Thanks about the bed, when I saw that I knew we HAD to have it...

    2. It is a larder cabinet. Used to make breads & pies etc. I thought mine was from the 1800s as was told to me. However I found a date of 1950 under the metal cover you use to work kn. It was on the metal.

  2. If you like it, keep them on there. I would. Our guest bedroom is furnished entirely with family heirlooms.

    1. Yeah, there is something to be said for that. This room will definitely be an homage to my Mom, both of these pieces were in her bedroom when she passed and I was shocked when I measured and they fit so beautifully.

  4. You have a couple of options
    1. Leave as is
    2. Take the doors off and replace
    3. Take a picture and paint it to suit your style
    4. Use fabric and starch and cover insets.

Whatever you decide it is adorable

    1. I'd scratch off 2 and 3...mainly because the color is perfect as it is and also I'm not at that skill level yet for new door creation, lol. 1 is what I was leaning toward but 4 intrigues me. I need to google that to see how it's done...I'll keep y'all posted....

  6. Does it bring fond memories to YOU? Don't keep pieces you don't love. If you don't want to paint it out of obligation, it's the wrong reason to leave it as it is. This is YOUR home and YOU have to live there. The fact that you're asking for opinions tells me you're not crazy about it as is.

Do what is best for you and that you will love having in your home.

    1. Oh, it brings fond memories for sure. Hmm, it's not that I'm not crazy about it, I really think it's neat and fun, just wondered if it would be too odd in a guest room. I'm thinking we'll keep it as is!

  7. I have to say removing the scenes, or any refinishing other than professional restoration, will probably ruin its future value as an antique. That being said, if you care more about the current look than about value, I say go for whatever you want. I love it as it is. It brings out my inner child, as well as a showing whimsical garden that goes well with the rooms decor.

    1. I never thought about the inner child thing...very cute. And it does have a bit of a whimsical garden aspect to it, doesn't it? I think that's kind of cool! thanks for point that out.

  8. First of all, I love that headboard! Personally, I love the images and I would leave it as it is but I agree with Kelly --- this is your home and you should love it when you look at it. If you refinish the piece I know it will be beautiful. Everything I have seen so far has been. Can hardly wait to see the finished room photos.

    1. Thanks about the headboard! yes, we love that bed frame. Can't wait to get the mattress and make it look more complete. Thanks for the comments, we really appreciate it!!

  9. You asked for opinions, so here is mine. Don't remove the images. However, I think the piece would be more in keeping with the room if you took Tonya's suggestion and used fabric and starch to cover over the images in the insets. In my mind's eye I see a pale gingham check or even a tiny stripe, but of course after the bedspread and curtains make their appearance you would be better able to make that choice. As others have said however, it's more important what you want than what anyone else thinks.

    1. I forgot to add....it fits right in with the Teddy bear! It's a room that can make anyone feel younger. That's not a bad thing :-)

    2. You know, i couldn't see anything else on there, but the stripes intrigue me. Maybe this is one of those things that, like you said, wait until curtains, bedspread, accessories are all in place and then see how it "fits'. And yes, we'll ultimately decide what we want but thought it would be fun to throw it out there and see what people thought. I'm glad I did, you and everyone elsel have had some great comments, thanks!!!

    3. Granny, I never thought about that! Perhaps I could use that as a theme like you suggested. That's never a bad thing! Stay tuned!!!

  10. Keep it the way it is...fits the room perfectly. I agree with Granny: a young at heart room...wonderful!

  11. Adding to all the other great comments; it's a GUEST room. Not a permanent resident's place to be, so you can make it as whimsical as you like. There was a suggestion earlier and I may have read it wrong but you could get a picture or two to make the theme work. Since I'm probably going to be staying in that room at least once (just putting it out there :-) !) , I'm just going to say "I like it!".

    1. Hey Alison! I have been thinking about that, a picture or two that keep the theme of childhood whimsy. And yes, realistically, it's for guests so whimsical it is! And of course you'll be staying there at least once (for those regular readers, Alison is one of our dearest friends and an all around awesome person).

  12. I'd keep it that way imo, that makes it more "authentic"
