USES FOR GREEN TOMATOES

I had to cut a renegade branch on the tomato vine down near the bottom and there were some green tomatoes on it...

Green tomatoes
Not that we could have done much with these three little guys, but it made us wonder, what CAN be done (if anything) with green tomatoes?

Of course we know there are the ubiquitous "Fried Green Tomatoes" (have eaten them but never made them) but we were just wondering if anyone had any other uses for green tomatoes?

Or anyone ever grown a tomato plant JUST for using its green tomatoes?

  2. Put them in a paper bag and they will ripen. As for green tomatoes I have made relish and a green tomato mincemeat that was wonderful in a pie. You might need more than 3 however. Around here, people are always looking to buy green tomatoes so they can make fried ones.

    1. Thanks for this info. Relish sounds yummy. Interesting I wonder if it would be feasible to grow a tomato just to harvest green tomatoes? Sounds like yummy ideas! Thanks!

  4. My favorite thing to do with green tomatoes is to lightly pickle them for salads. I save dill pickle juice, heat it up and pour it over sliced green tomatoes. Stick them in the fridge for a few days and add them to a salad. Yum!

    1. Thanks for this, great idea for end of season use!! There's bound to be some that won't ripen by the time it's "done" for the season.

  9. I usually either let them ripen in a cool, dark place or - my favorite -make fried green tomatoes.

    For some different ideas:
The "sweet and tangy" bread-and-butter-style green tomato pickles looks especially good - from here:

This green tomato salsa verde looks good also: http://www.freshpreserving.com/green-tomato-salsa-verde---ball-fresh-preserving-br1033.html#q=green%2Btomato%2Bsalsa&start=1

    And this relish: http://www.food.com/recipe/green-tomato-relish-hot-dog-relish-70538

  10. Along with relish and pickles, green tomatoes also work very well in a stir-fry - they soften a little and become sweeter with the heat but wont be mushy.

    Happy gardening and eating, Michelle
