Birds are always so fascinating to watch but large birds like this hawk are just beautiful and amazing to watch.
This one flew around the trees behind the house watching me...or more likely, watching for dinner to come scurrying out from under the bushes.
Hawk in flight |
Look at that flight..it's like a machine just gliding through the air.
It's just amazing and beautiful...
It landed in another group of trees and stayed for about 10 minutes...
...only to fly away one last time and I didn't see it the rest of the day.
Thanks for visiting...come back and eat mice anytime!
Looks like a Red Tailed Hawk. First thought maybe a an Adult Cooper Hawk but don't believe it is. No matter what; it's gorgeous and such great photos.
ReplyDeleteIt sure kept a close eye on you; just making sure you where doing everything the right way I guess. :}
We have lots of red tailed hawks that fly around overhead. One day I had counted 13 flying around over head in a large group. (they must have had a convention going on or something. :} )
I think you're right it does have a reddish tail. Thank you!!
DeleteNice pictures of the hawk. They eat the littler birds too, but hey, they have to eat. I have seen them dive down and even carrying a snake. I love to see them circling in the sky, calling to one another in the spring.
ReplyDeleteI'm ok with snakes and mice...sad about little birds but like you said, it's all part of the circle of life I suppose. I'm not sure I've heard them calling to each other, I'll have to listen for that.
DeleteFeathered enchantment.
ReplyDeleteWow. Two words, perfect description!
Deletewe have falcons in our gardens. it's amazing how everything, including other birds, disappear the moment they come out.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the other lesser birds and animals have an internal red alert signal, ha.
Deletewe have a red tail hawk in the woods behind our house. I recognize its call now and I watch the other birds scatter into the bushes when they hear it.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to listen for it. That's interesting!!
DeleteI lost my fondness for hawks when I started keeping chickens.
ReplyDeleteAww, dang, I didn't think about that aspect. I think 2nd Family has been lucky so far but I'll have to remind them of that possibility.
DeleteThe hawk probably hoped you would scare up mice to catch. Hawks only mean one thing to me now--chicken eaters. Four cats in the neighborhood and my two chickens disappeared in one week.
ReplyDeleteCats? Yikes! OK, I'll have to watch out for the hawks and tell 2nd Family to be careful with their animals and feathered friends.
Delete1st Man - we have ravens who are almost as big as your hawks, i swear! they come every morning and they jump up and down on our roof - they are waiting for jambaloney to bring kitchen scraps for them. they'll eat birdseed but they prefer the kitchen scraps. the other birds aren't afraid of them - we give them their kitchen scraps far from the feeder...but i have never met more timid birds than these giants. i'll get a pic of them for you!
ReplyDeleteyou'll also love our L'Ardoise eagle (properly pronounced it's "Lordwoi, but the people here call it Lordways - it kills us!). he sits on a pole and eats from the harbour. that eagle is really well fed as people save food and chuck it out of their cars/trucks to feed him. he's huuuuuge!!!!
sending much love to both of you, as always! your friend,
kymber
I've heard ravens are VERY intelligent. They probably are jumping on your roof on purpose, to wake you up and feed them, ha. I'd LOVE to see a pic. And I'm going to google that eagle right now, I bet it's a beauty.
DeleteBeautiful pictures of a beautiful creature!! And you always tell a great story to go along with them.
ReplyDeleteThank you much!!!
DeleteFantastic photos, well done! We too have chickens but our Great Pyrenees keeps the hawks and other predators at bay. I still slow the car if I see a hawk up high overhead, they are so awesome to watch.
ReplyDeleteThey are awesome to watch (thanks for the complement on the photos too!). I bet the dog does a good job of keeping them away. 2nd Family has a couple of big dogs that keep birds away (except the ducks, they let the ducks come for some reason).
DeleteEspecially like the close up, the feather curling on the edge of the wing is really cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks and you know what I thought of when I saw that? There are planes now that have their wing tips bent up at an angle like that! Fascinating!!! Thanks for commenting!
DeleteGreat pics. He's reminding you, if you get chickens, beware. My chickens are in a secure pen, as we get visits from those who attack from above.
ReplyDeleteLOL, that is so true. I did find out that 2nd Family has lost a few chicks to hawks, so they put a top on their pen for the first time this past year. Thanks for this reminder!!!
