GREAT FIND TRASH TO TREASURE

Regular readers know that I have a favorite place to look for bargains...our downstairs trash area!  Our building has trash chutes on every floor and they feed into a separate room, but for boxes and other things that people can't put in the chute, there is an area (indoor) near the loading dock where people can put the things they don't want.  I've found quite a few cool items over the last few years.

Here is one of the latest!

OK so I saw this nondescript box sitting on top of another box.  I thought it was just random cardboard box as there was a flattened box on top of this.  I almost walked past it but I just moved a bit of the flat box on top and saw this...

...the tops of Ball jars!  I turned the box around and the other side has the Ball logo.  I was so excited.  I carried it back upstairs and took them out.

There are nine clear ones and three of the pale blue ones, all regular mouth pint jars.  They were never used, at least for food.  They were perfectly clean and the lids are brand new.  Our guess is they were maybe used for decoration at a party or event.  We ran the jars through the dishwasher and of course I'd buy new lids before ever using just in case (the rings are fine).

Hey, I'll take a free dozen jars!

  1. What a Deal, right place at the right time.
With just 3 blue jars and rest are clear, they might had been used for a boy baby shower.
The flats you can still use if you plan on filling the jars with dry products, beans, pasta, etc. I never throw away my used flats as they can be reused as plant markers, craft projects -(Christmas ornaments),mount photos on them, add a magnet and stick on your refrigerator or magnet board, wind chimes, etc.
    Possibilities are endless.
    Enjoy your weekend

  4. What a wonderful find!! The pint size is a good size. I really love the blue colored ones - so pretty for storage or decorating. Canning jars are harder to find at this time. I’ve looked for them in both Walmart and H-E-B lately and they are not in stock here.
I save my used lids because I store my jars in the garage and I like to store them covered to keep them clean inside. Colleen had some other good ideas for them.

  5. I hope you keep the lids as they are good when just storing beans or rice. Plus, I use old lids when I put leftovers in a jar. I used a Ball jar to store hummingbird nectar.

    That was a fantastic find!

  8. Oh what a lovely find!

We're in the process of moving to another farm. Our partially finished barn at the farm we're moving from - THE reason we bought the place besides the 50 very nice acres - has been used primarily as storage for our auction and estate sale finds. And given that my husband has been the one who moved most everything from the vehicles to the barn, as we go back to that place and pack things to bring to the new place I'm finding all sorts of goodies. And, boy! Have I EVER collected the canning jars! I've got them from pint to gallon size, mostly clear, but I've got many many blue, some green, some purple. Woo?hoo!
