Nostalgia Electrics Red Microwave |
Here is our microwave story; we haven't had one in years!
It's probably been 10 or more years without one. We cook most food fresh so we just never needed one. Coworkers and other friends would often ask "but how do you cook popcorn?" or "how do you melt butter?" or "how do you thaw stuff from the freezer?" or "how do you cook potatoes?" Well let's see, we cook popcorn on the stove top in a pot, takes a few minutes, we melt butter in a small saucepan, it takes a few minutes as well, we put stuff from the freezer in the fridge and let it thaw the night before, and we roast potatoes in the oven when we need to. You'd be surprised how you can make do without one.

That being said however, as 2nd Man gets more and more into baking, there are times when a microwave could speed up the process. We're fans of the Cooks Illustrated show "America's Test Kitchen" and a lot of their shortcuts often involve a microwave (to give things a head start). There are even crafts I'd like to do that need microwaving (dried flowers, melting wax, etc).
Last week, we decided that if we could find the perfect microwave, we'd go ahead and get one. So I was doing some online research and stumbled across the one above. It is made by Nostalgia Electrics and is called the Retrowave.
While we didn't get ours from Amazon, here is the link to the same one on Amazon, complete with, at the time of this posting, free shipping.
Nostalgia Series Microwave.
Yep, it looks like it is sufficiently retro to fit in at the farm. Pretty cool huh?

No frozen dinners are on our horizon because I am certain that they would NOT come close to our own home cooking, contrary to this vintage ad, ha.
For now, it's in town, so we can use it and experiment with it but it will eventually move right on out to the farm, where it's already got a spot waiting for it, the top of the fridge in the mudroom.

How neat! And it is a sporty red like your car, ha! After checking their website I know have about a dozen more kitchen gadgets I have added to my want list!
ReplyDeleteHa, one of my friends saw the picture on my computer and said "does you car come with a microwave?", joking of course but it's pretty close,
DeleteOMG, they have some great gadgets huh? I want the snow cone machine...the popcorn machine...the cotton candy machine...I'm sending a theme here!
You guys are so cool! Hey, maybe you could use a retro Granny down there on that farm!
ReplyDeleteYou're a pretty cool Granny too! Come on down, the more the merrier. Of course, our Summer's are a bit warmer than yours, ha.
DeleteI love it - a lot.
ReplyDeleteI love the colour and the retro look. I think it will look very stylish in the kitchen.
I have also had a look at the website and I see that they have a tabletop popcorn maker. I know AGA would love one of those. Now to check if they sell those things outside of America!

Aww, thanks! I know a lot of those products are available on Amazon, you might check there. That popcorn machine is great isn't it? Good luck, keep us posted.
DeleteHE'S a dish!
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up! Well I hadn't had anything on the posters lately for you. ;-)
DeleteIt is really cool! We use our microwave mostly for reheating leftovers.
ReplyDeleteYep, we're finding that's a great use too! Not much I think I'd cook in there, but you know, we could make our OWN frozen dinners that ARE homemade, ha. And just reheat in there. Nothing wrong with that I suppose.
DeleteWell, that is a beauty!
ReplyDeleteThanks! When I saw it I just knew it was the one. It was actually much more inexpensive than I thought it might be....
DeleteIt's a lovely one!
ReplyDeleteWell thank you for that! I figure if we have to have one, why not make it match? Ha.
DeleteI think its a beauty as well, I don't have one but if I did I would like this one!
ReplyDeleteWe really only got it for a few things we wanted to do and believe it or not, haven't use it that much in a week. But yeah, we figured it was time to break down and get one, but I wanted it to make sure it fit. ;-)
DeleteI've never seen a microwave like this one. I suppose it comes in different colors, too?
ReplyDeleteHi! From what I could tell on the website, they have three, red, black and a pale green (that retro pale jade green color popular in the 50's). It is a cool design huh? I figured if you need some utilitarian appliance, why not make sure it's aesthetically pleasing? LOL!!! Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI'm not a huge fan of the micro...but i must admitt this one is cool looking :)
ReplyDeletenice to meet ya fellow walker fan :)
Oh, I love that microwave! Thank you for the link!
ReplyDeleteAs for the Vintage Swanson Ad... boy does that make me feel old! ;o)
You amaze me! You really do. You find the coolest stuff. Even when it's not cool, you make it cool; you and your paint cans. I am in awe. And you're funny too. Can't get better than that.
