DINING ROOM WALL OIL LAMPS

Wall mounted oil lamps off
When we spent the night at the farm a couple of nights last month, we used the wall mounted oil lamps that we bought last year and this time, I finally remembered to take some pictures so we could share what they look like.  They put out a surprisingly large amount of light when all of them were lit.  There is one more to the left of the photo, just out of camera range, five total.
(pay no mind to the missing roller shade, it will soon be replaced, ha).

There is no overhead lighting in the dining room and while we do have a couple of wall outlets that we could plug lamps into, for now anyway, we're going to try it with oil lamps and candles as the lighting source in the dining room.

Wall mounted oil lamps lit
It's soft light, inviting and warm, and it harkens back to an older time.  It's obviously still a work in progress but we think it's coming along nicely!

We have to remind ourselves we don't have to be in a hurry, it will all come together as it's supposed to and this lighting is just one more step.

The next step is an old fashioned tabletop oil lamp for each room and we've got some ideas for that (and even already have some options).

They are pretty and practical to have hanging up all year round, and in an emergency, they can be our light source for any room.  I guess you could say this is all part of our prepping in plain sight I blogged about a while back.

  1. LOVE them! One tip: buy high quality oil/paraffin oil. Less odor, less smoke and no black marks on the ceiling. No need to ask how I know :)

    1. Yes, I had read that and did buy the higher quality (and more expensive, ha) oil, I think it was pure paraffin oil. LOL, I can imagine what might have happened, ha. We all learn the hard way sometimes huh? Ha.

  2. How beautiful! I was going to ask if they made black smoke stains on those white walls, but it looks like Linda handled that question :-) We just bought a mobile home for a granddaughter, and the walls and ceilings were all black with soot from the previous owner's love of burning incense. At least it smelled good while we were cleaning it up, LOL!

    1. Thank you!! Nope no smoke stains and we actually burned them several hours. But we did use the 'good stuff' as they say, ha. So funny you said that about soot. A friend of ours complained about how they had this black soot on their walls and found out hey burned incense constantly. Ooops! It's so wild because when it's burning, you don't see it, or at least it's not obvious. At least you found a silver lining! :-)

    1. Well thank you much. It's a small room and they are scaled just right too. Nope they were on for about 3 hours and there is no telltale gunk on the walls or ceiling (or even the white curtains). We used the pure paraffin oil.

    1. Aww, thanks! It's a small room very narrow. It actually used to be a porch but "Ma", the previous owner, enclosed it. Of course, when we are there, we end up eating on the front porch in the rocking chairs most of the time, ha.

  5. 1st Man - first off, the lamps are gorgeous!!! and Linda above is correct...trust me on that one and don't ask me how i know. but i know!

more importantly, would you consider trading that gorgeous dining room set for one of jambaloney's legs? it's your choice of left or right?

I FREAKIN LOVE THAT DINING ROOM SET!!!!!

    *reminds herself about "inside voice".

    1. Thank you sweet Kymber! So how do you know about the.....oh, never mind. I can use my imagination, ha.

Hmmm, one of his legs....I'll have to think about that one. Which is the stronger leg, left or right? LOL!

You are too kind, we loved the table when we found it. It was at Nadeau, one of our favorite stores. It's made of 100% mango wood which is sustainable and so we love that. It's just such a warm color too.

  6. I grew up with kerosene lamps whenever the power was out ... which was frequently as we lived on an island in the Pacific NW ... smoking lamps were always a problem. Also you might find it interesting to look for a set of mirrors that would be mounted on the wall behind the lamp chimney which then doubles the light. Some have slight saucer shape ... which reflects even more than flat mirror. I googled and found many pictures but this link is to Lehman's which sells them ...http://non-electric.lehmans.com/hardware/Oil%20Lamp%20Reflector and gives a better idea what I'm trying to describe. When you wash the chimneys, be sure the glass is cold ... as I recall they broke easily if the glass was too warm and the water too cold!

    1. Well thank you for that advice. We were worried about smoking but the oil (at least in these) worked well. That's why we want more of them, in case of extended power outages.

Ironically, we got these lamps FROM Lehman's. They do have small polished metal discs behind them but they are small and aren't really 'mirrors'. But your comment makes me think about putting some real ones back there. I will check that out at Lehman's (love that catalog by the way, we want one of everything, ha).

    2. If you are trying to get the most light, those dished or cupped reflectors, even though not true mirrors will, i think give you more light than a flat mirror ... have to test it out and see ..

  7. Those lights give it such a nice touch. Must be lots of fun to eat dinner in there.

[What's on your table? They dwarf the room.]

    1. We have had several meals in there, though we often end up on the front porch, ha. But it is very relaxing and peaceful in there when eating. They are large glass vases/bottles I found once upon a time. We move them around and use them for different things. They currently have some reeds that I picked up at Pier One as I recall. I put them in there to see what they look like. You think too big? I kind of like the dramatic look they give but it might be big. I'm working on a different kind of table centerpiece too.

    1. Well thank you! Yes the lights really make it (at night of course). It was so nice and inviting in there and isn't that what dining rooms should be about? :-)

  9. Beautiful ambiance. I grew up with kerosene lamps which we took from room to room. Have to be very careful as they are very hot. Love the progress. Thanks for sharing.

    1. With my occasional 'shaky hands', I think I'd be dangerous carrying them from room to room, ha. It's just a few steps at a time, right? Ha. Thank you!

  10. 1st Man,

This room is gorgeous, I love all the oil lamps on the walls. Mine are just sitting around on table tops in rooms. These are really nice to use to help calm the environment, and great for romantic evening.

    1. We're going to sit some around in the other rooms too. I'll blog about the oil lamps that we have soon. I need to fix a couple of them up. They were actually in my grandparents cellar for years. But they need new 'innards'. Calming is a perfect description. It was very relaxing and nice. And yeah, I can see the romantic aspect too, :-)

  11. What a simple but beautiful room!! I love using oil lamps except in summer. Lamps put out a surprising amount of heat which is nice except when it is already hot. When staying in the cabin with no electricity we make sure we eat before it gets really dark and do the dishes in the morning. We use battery lantern or those headlamps for other activities and leave the oil lamps for cooler temps.

    1. Great idea. We do get hot in the summer and that room can get warm. Eating before dark and doing dishes in the morning is a great idea, even with electricity. I should get some of those battery lanterns as well. Thanks!!

    1. Of course not! They came from Lehman's. It's a great resource for all sorts of fun stuff. I'm not 100% sure they still have these particular ones, but they do have some others (that I actually like also, might have to get some for other rooms, ha. www.lehmans.com

    2. I have a Lehman's catalog! Evidently, I need to see them in a setting rather than in a catalog! They are lovely on your walls!!

    3. Ha, sometimes that does make a difference. Actually, I was looking online and I don't think they have 'these' lamps anymore, but the ones they do have I actually kind of like better, at least the looks of. Good luck!!
