THE DAY AT THE FARM

You ever use up all your energy and just hit the wall and can't do anymore?  That happened today.  I DID have to mow once I got out there....could have let it go a week but just to be on the safe side, I figured it was best to go ahead and mow so that next weekend wouldn't be more work.

Of course the temp was in the upper 90's (we almost made it to 100 today).  After a couple hours on the mower, I was reaching that point.  After mowing I had to do some work with the bees and working with the hives (more on that in an upcoming post) and that was a good hour and a half of the day (and hot, had to wear the bee suit).  I also unloaded about 30 of those large rocks I'm bringing from in town and then I had to unload some bags of mulch.

I was going to break out the weedeater, but as you can see from this flower bed I didn't get to that.  Side note, photo taken to show we have some color!  They are only marigolds but hey, it's some color other than green.  Anyway, see the tall grass around the landscape timbers?  It's like that all around the house and garden fence and barns and trees...sigh.

I just hit the wall and couldn't do anymore.  I had to put everything up and call it a day.  I stopped off at 2nd Family on the way out and dropped off a loaf of freshly baked bread that 2nd Man made early this morning.

They surprised us with THREE DOZEN fresh eggs from their girls.  Woo hoo!  I sense another frittata in our meal planning this week, and maybe some homemade pasta.  I headed back into town about 5pm and when I got home...

...2nd Man had one of my favorite meals ready...pan seared pork chop, mashed potatoes (forgot to get the picture with gravy) and of course southern style green beans with tomatoes and bacon, RECIPE HERE.

Oh and a glass (or two) of wine...

I might have been worn out but it was a good day.

  2. What a lot of work you accomplished. No wonder you were bushed. Your dinner looks delicious! 2nd man's green beans with tomato and bacon is the best looking I have ever seen. Usually mushy dull green green bean pieces. Recipe?

  4. 1st,
Now, Now, they are not “only marigolds”. I actually love marigolds, from the single bloom up through the doubles and triples. And I really like the heirloom ones that have the true marigold fragrance, that sort of spice aromatics. And you planting area is looking absolutely gorgeous, as well as the pork chops :-) - G

    1. LOL! You are right. Thank you for that. Actually I DO love marigolds too. And they love the weather here so I think we're going to love them even more. I need to do some research on the various kinds. Might be worthwhile to locate them all over. And yes the smell, to me too, is intoxicating. I love it. Thank you for the kind words!

  5. I have too often hit that wall. Hard. And very rarely been revived with a home cooked medicinal elixir like the one 2nd man made for you.

  6. I do hit that wall as well, hence the container gardening. Dadgummed wall is hard, too!

What a lovely meal, and loving gesture, 2nd man prepared for you. The kind of love that takes care of one another is the very best kind. =)

  9. 1st Man,

Doing all that work with cutting the grass, moving rocks on to the property from the car in this heat can be very exhausting. Sometimes you just need to say enough is enough, you don't want to get sick from heat stroke. Good thing you stopped, the weed whacking/edging can wait another time. I did the same thing this weekend, it was so darn hot outside.

Coming home to a cooked meal like that is just amazing!!! Second Man is a keeper :-)
    Hugs to you both,
    Sandy

    1. Enough is enough is exactly what went through my head. I just said to myself "I really can't do anymore....that's it". Then it was a struggle to put everything back up. Thank you for the kind words, yeah, I'll keep him, ha.

  11. Found my way here via a hillside planting photo online. What a lovely place you have and a lifestyle that is so wonderful, albeit a lot of work.
Your neighbors eggs are prettier than any that show up at Easter.
Kudos to anyone who supports bees.

  13. No wonder you hit the wall - you sure did a LOT of work! And in this heat!
Those eggs from 2nd Family are gorgeous - and the colors - wow. Nothing better than farm-yard eggs. I get mine from a local person also - the taste can’t be beat.
Your flowers look so cheerful! Marigolds are perfect for providing color in the heat of summer.
And then to come home to that supper - the perfect ending to a good, productive day of Farm work. Thank you to 2nd Man for the recipe! That guy can cook!

    1. Aw, thanks, I will pass that along to him. Farmyard eggs are amazing. People who don't understand just don't understand, ha. I'm loving the marigolds, and hey, I think I might do some research on other varieties, heirlooms, etc. Thanks!! Now let's all stay inside where it's cool, right?
